I built a 2011 today on www.bmw.ca

Mine would be a 35i, in Aventurine Silver, with Tobacco leather, Walnut Amarone trim, and 265 wheels. Executive Package, Premium Package, and Individual Collection (to get the paint, wheels, and leather I like). Add in the roof rails, and the rear view camera. Left out the tech package, M Sport, and 3rd row seat.

It is a completely different configurator than I have used on bmw.ca previously, so perhaps that is why the delay down in the land of the free. Feel free to visit BMW Canada on the web to see the build options we have, though.

I think everyone is getting a little worked up over the BYO. Does it make sense that the '11's are out yet no '11 BYO ? No. Are they trying to sell '10's ? Yes, every manufacturer is. Do IT snafu's happen in big companies and projects get pushed back ? Yes. Did the BYO for the '07's come out before they were on the lot ? Yes. But that was a brand new model where this is just a mid-cycle change.

You did notice that it's a 2010 X5 in the picture, right?

That reminds me, I am going to send an email to BMW Canada and thank them for having the configurator up. It goes both ways when providing constructive criticism.

Update: Since I tried to send an email through the BMW.ca website, I typed it all up and hit submit but the server didn't respond. Seemed kind of ironic since I tried to thank them for having a terrific website

I think the issue is that the X5's are built in the USA yet we don't have an updated X5 BYO site.. My dealer and all the dealers around my area have more new 2011's on the lot and no 2010's for a few of them. I work down the street from my dealer and 2011's are constantly being delivered. The BYO would have been a big help for me and others not reading the forums. The 2011 X5's have 3 different trim levels which makes the order process more difficult. I knew more than my CA about the 2011 standard/options than he did because I read the forums. Unfortunately my e92 lease ended on MAY 8 so I couldn't wait for the BYO site to launch.
With that being said I still love BMW autos and their website

A 60+ grand ordering mistake based on confusion at the dealer is not a good thing for people.

Precisely. Consumers have become accustomed to doing everything online and building cars is no different. Most of the sales people at my dealer are not very well informed about the car and packages. I refuse to believe this was a sales tactic in order to move the 2010s. BMW is competing with the cayenne in the segment and their site is working just fine. I still want an x5 and I still want to build that f*#@er online!
PS my apologies for starting this nonsense thread in the first place!

It's not a sales tactic, it's a mistake. Like others, I got the same e-mail. Getting excited that I'd be able to configure the car, I clicked the link, and was presented with the 2010 configurator. Additionally, the main site itself, on the fifth "pane" of the center Flash demo contains information on configuring cars. The 20111 X5 is one of the four cars displayed.

As mentioned earlier, the next gen 5 which is not available yet can be configured online. I'm sure that there are remaining 5's on dealer lots that need to be sold. Yet, no 2010's in sight.

All in all, this is just a blunder. Several people e-mailing them should make them realize they have a problem. Nothing major, the sky is not going to fall. But is certainly doesn't scream professional.
