Seems like around 18-19 mpg is what most are getting. I've slowly climbed up to 15 now. Another tank or 2 and I should be with the rest of you! Probably nothing wrong with the car then. |

I've got a 3.0 and I average around 17.5 city and 21-22 highway. I've noticed that my mileage actually seems to be worse if I try to be extra easy on the pedal away from a stop. If I accelerate reasonably and get to the speed I want to maintain lets say 55 within around 10 seconds (guessing) I seem to get my best mileage. I'm sure it has to have something to do with time spent accelerating and consumption not being linear to throttle application.

And yes - that was my experience as well. I've even proved - very early on, from 2000 miles on the car - that at higher speeds, it does better. 70MPH on the highway gets me about 24.5MPG/avg. 80MPH gets me 26MPG/avg. Same for city driving - 45MPH/avg yields about 17.5MPG, but 55MPG/avg yields 19.5MPG. (all are close estimates) And even before it's broken in, when you get it "up to speed," you'll see it just glides smooth as silk over the roads. It no way does it seem designed for lower or "average" speeds. I agree completely. |

![]() Combined is 19.6 steady for well over a month now. I do mostly city driving. I had to take a day trip to Charlotte (~300 miles roundtrip) and got 25MPG. On some longer trips, it's closer to 26MPG. I doubt it's going to go any higher than that, but maybe.. On highways, I drive around 75MPG/avg. and get that. Since in this state, more than 10MPH over in a 70MPH zone is "reckless driving" (and instant loss of your license) I don't regularly drive over that. But of course I HAVE and that fuel economy seems to hold up around 80MPH. Beyond that, I imagine it will get worse, but who knows.. This vehicle REALLY seems to have been designed for high speed. If you want to go faster, well.. In the US, a non-Sport Package X5 is limited to 130MPH. It only goes 128MPH, actually. Or so I read. Somewhere. Not on the speedometer. Sport package boosts it to 150MPH. There's a video on YouTube (can't find it just now) that shows it running flat out on the Autobahn at ~172MPH and you can watch the gas gauge drop. |

35d. Mostly suburban driving, 90% in a 5-7 mile radius. (eg: 1.25 mi to drop kid off at school, 2.25mi to work, anywhere from 1 to 5 miles to lunch). A Long drive is only 14 miles (Ikea...)
I found out that is not what a diesel was made for: I have 10k miles now. For the last 2k, I consistently get 19mpg. For the first 8k I got about 17mpg. My tank will go up to 22 if I put a 200mile round trip in there (about every other month). 25 if I drive the tank out at 80. I'm certain that if I had to drive across town to work, my mileage would be a lot better. But then again, I wouldn't be able to go 14 days between fillups. |

35i with 15K miles. Just drove it 1600 miles to Florida. Average MPG a hair over 23 doing 80 MPHish. Best was 24.6 and worst was 21.7 on trip (obviously has pumps will vary).
When I did the same with a 35d last year it averaged around 24 at similar speeds. (Note this was winter diesel part of the trip). So not a bad showing by the 35i. One thing that still amazes me about the 35i. The thing just flies when needed to pass people at higher speeds. |
