e70 NAV Screen blacking out - question
The NAV screen in my 2007 X5 4.8 has done the blackout thing a few times in the past (mostly when its cold, as others have noted). About a month ago, it was in for some other service, I asked them to look at it.. dealer said there was no error codes in the system, and they could not reproduce the problem.
I was charged about $100-120 for a software update, and this past weekend, about 3 weeks after the software update, the screen went black and would not turn back on. It was at the dealer yesterday, and I'm told it needs a new system. The X5 has approx 58,000 miles. I've had it about 1 year. The dealer said they would speak with BMW about getting 'assistance' for the approx $3k cost for part and labor. As much as I love this car - in the year I've had it, I've had the pleasure of driving multiple new BMW loaners. The car has a CPO warranty, and factory maint, which should help keep maint costs down, but having to spend 3k on a NAV screen before 60k miles is unacceptable. Can anyone offer suggestions for how to approach this with the dealer should BMW choose not to help?? Thanks for any advice or info! Sean - |

... 3k ?
Its either the screen (probably) or the CCC. Doubt it's both. If its the screen ... That's a easy fix that requires no coding or programming. To replace the screen would take 10 minutes and you could do it yourself. The CCC replacement is more complex. Replacing the CCC would take 20 minutes ish ... Then would need to be programmed / coded. Have a look on eBay. Lots so used screens for 300 bucks. Not affiliated with seller. Just a suggestion. If you're interested in doing this yourself ping me. I can give you step by step to replace screen. BMW e70 X5 GPS Navigation Monitor/Screen,display USED | eBay Last edited by apw2607; 11-23-2011 at 10:27 PM. |

There are a few folks who specialize in BMW nav upgrades.... reach out to them for assistance.
You need to get a firm diagnosis. Ask the dealer for details on what is bad, what needs replacing and WHY. What specific tests and codes have they seen? And I agree that apw2607 will probably be a good resource, you can look at some of his prior posts on nav and idrive upgrades A |

I had the screen-darkening randomly problem before on my '08 - if you take a flashlight to it, the idrive functions are still working, correct? I had my screen replaced, under warranty, so no idea of cost. No codes either, just the screen. Make sure it's just the screen vs. the whole system.

Hey All - thanks for your responses.
BMW covered the replacement of the CID (not sure exactly what that stands for.. computer internal display? - elsewhere it refers to the onboard monitor). Here is what the paperwork referred to: Fault A165A, Fault Internal, Perform Test Plan D6581-CID00000-90-003. Is it possible to update the iDrive? I've enjoyed the newest iDrive system in a couple recent loaner cars, and while the version in my X5 isn't bad, if I can upgrade, I'd be interested. I'll do some searches on the forums. Again - thanks for the info. Sean - |

Glad BMW stepped up. Member apw above posted a thread on his replacement of the old CCC-based iDrive system with the newer CIC based system. A few people sell a 'kit' or parts you need to do it. |

Thanks ARD - the paperwork from my dealer does have the CID part number included. I'll search for the thread about updating the iDrive system and see what's involved.

The nav screen in my 2008 4.8 has gone very dark at least once so is this something I need to monitor closely? The X5 was at the dealer a few days later for various things so I added the black screen to the list but they didn't turn up anything obvious.

next time it happens, take a video of it - shine a flashlight on it and show them it's still running but the screen is dark, show them the brightness setting is maxed. Show your service advisor this video and they'll have to say it's "verified" to be a problem, which is what happened with me. Or worse case is you've already told them about it and they don't fix it but it's on record so you get a freebie even when it's out of warranty and happens again.

2008 4.8i -- My screen went black and won't turn back on. It's been black for a couple of days now. Before it would always come back on after re-starting the car.
If I shine a flashlight on the NAV screen, I can still see the menu and control the system. Seems to be a backlight failure. Do I need a new screen or can I just buy a backlight? I bought the Route 66 extended warranty when I purchased the vehicle in August, but my warranty did not have the option of electronics coverage |
