Not really. It means that you are in agreement that the government can and should require mandatory equipment on vehicles if it enhances safety.

So this focuses the discussion on where the line should be drawn, not if the government should be doing these sorts of things.

I myself think that mandatory rear cameras is over the line, but that mandatory rear sensors is right about on the line, i.e., I could be swayed either way on the mandatory sensors, depending upon the cost.

Personally I am glad the government mandated things such as collapsible steering columns, etc. Remember before the late 1960's how many people would die in car accidents when the steering column was pushed into their chest? Vehicles today are much safer due to governmental intervention, and as costs go down, more and more things will be "crossing the line" as mandatory.

While you are staring at your dashboard screen, knowing exactly what is directly behind the rear bumper, you will be oblivious to the cars/motorcycles/pedestrians/pets that are approaching your intended path from either side, perhaps at speed. When reversing, you should be looking over your shoulder and scanning both sides, period.

IF there must be another government mandate to protect ourselves from ourselves, it should be for rear sensors only.
