It's on page 33 of the manual
Why are people blithely ignoring this post?!?!

If you put the key inside the car, AND shut the door, the car locks when you have this feature turned on.

There is no 'person detector' is there???? Are people saying the car is supposed to differentiate between "key inside car" and "key and person inside car"?

if people getting locked out have CONFIRMED that this feature is off, then there is a problem....

it is a real problem, you should have it check by your dealer.

But the door indeed was opened, and it shouldn't have locked it immediately anyway. The feature (called RELOCK DOOR IF NOT OPENED) if checked, "locks the vehicle after a short time when no door has been opened". The way I understand it, it is meant to re-lock doors should the passengers decide against leaving the vehicle... say they got caught up in conversation.

If unchecked, well obviously it still shouldn't have locked it.

We don't know what "a short time" is...and it would be super helpful if the state of this feature was known with all these reported events, so each can be accurately characterized.

No, this feature is for the initial unlocking, i.e. when you approach your locked vehicle, unlock it, but don't open any doors (say, forgot smthg and went back home). If activated, this feature will lock the vehicle back, after a minute or so.

Why are you "throwing" your purse in your car. Take all of two seconds and set it on the seat and problem is solved.

I've run into a similar issue that I don't think this setting solves. I jumped in my 12 35d at airport parking lot with key in my backpack. CA worked fine to open doors; threw backpack on passenger seat. Drove to a restaurant, got out with pack and locked car. Opened rear hatch to hide backpack (still with key in it) out of direct sight. Closed hatch, came back an hour later and no door would open.

I didn't think hatch was supposed to close with key in storage area.

iPhone app worked to unlock, but seems like a design shortcoming to me...

all I'm saying is that until she gets the dealer to look at why it's locking the car with the key still in it (or confirm there is no "key in car detector" functionality to begin with), just turn off that auto lock feature altogether, so she doesn't get her kid locked in the car again. That's all.

Ease up on the caffeine

She did say "as soon as I close the door" it locked. One commonality with people seeing this problem seems to be comfort access. Perhaps she's closing it with her hand on the handle and the purse is still within range.

You're right - makes a lot more sense. Never thought of it because I use CA to unlock so I'm actually opening the door every time.

Because of forgetfulness, what I wish for after a short time is for the alarm to set itself (passive arming), but that's another topic.

And this might be the easiest explanation of all... accidental keypress by something in the purse as it lands - the doors don't have to be closed yet and it will still lock, then it beeps after doors are closed leaving you to believe it was from the act of closing the door. Can't recall what that woman in the thread 4-5 years ago said but it also involved keys in a purse.

If CA is working right, the door lock should still pop back open immediately after as I mentioned earlier - that was my experience. And it's not difficult to test.

Maybe BMW should introduce recessed buttons on the fob like many other manufacturers. This might stop the "why are my windows all down" problems too.
