Just got a brand new X5 35D!

With a second kid on the way, I decided to get rid of my 911 and ordered an 2012 X5 35D. Platinum Gray w/ Sport Activity. I just picked up the car and the excitement started.... and then it ended...

I'd post pics of the new ride, except I got a check engine light the first day. Took it into the dealer where it's been the past 2 days. They say it's a "feed line" of some sort. Don't know what that means, I just know it's not the way to start off with a new car. I'll be without the car until next Wednesday. Apparently, they have to source a part that's not available around here.

I do have a question. I leased the car - am I just out of luck for this first week? Anyways, this is annoying to say the least. The X3 loaner isn't bad, but it's also not the same as the X5...

Sorry to hear... if you want US to give you feedback on the issue- what it means, the odds they fix it right the first time- you need to get actual fault codes and part names. The SAs really dont want you to know, they really could care less, so they just rattle off words hoping you are intimidated and wont ask any more. OTOH, if you are cool with just seeing what happens, then that's OK too.

Yes, you are 'out of luck'...they will not be crediting you with a months worth of lease payments, etc, etc..it is only one week. (For example the new F10 M5 was hit with a 2,3,4 week 'do not drive/recall' order. People are getting one month lease payment plus a day of M school...but that's an M5 and this was a major black eye for BMWAG... not a one-off on a measly X5)

Do keep in mind that they have 30 days in california- any time over the next 4 years if they exceed 30 days TOTAL out of service, you can lemon it. And if the ultimate issue is in any way related to this 'feed line', they must use the mileage at the time the event first occurred to compute your refund, so 99+% for you. Just FYI, I have no doubt this is a weird 'infant mortality' thing with yours.

I can relate. I took delivery of my 09 CPO and she threw a check that night. Emissions sensor. Had it fixed a week later due to me leaving for vacation. Smooth running now. Knock on wood.

I just got the car back this morning. Indication was that it was a bad fuel pressure sensor and/or feed line (didnt have time to read it all). 20 miles later, the light is back on again and my frustration grows. I picked up the car last week and haven't had it for over a day without a check engine light. If I wanted an X3 loaner, I would have bought an X3. Who knows what it is this time, but I think its ridiculous that I can't return this vehichle given that the service department will soon put more miles on it than me. Took it in with 170 miles and it had 217 on it this morning...

Damn, that is some post repair 'test drive'. 47 miles; must have been a good lunch joint up the road. Hope you get it fixed for good.

ard's info on lemon is good stuff, imo. Bookmark it...

1. I've posted a lot on the practical issues of how to get BMW to lemon. Search my user name and "lemon".

2. Everyone should write "No permission to operate car off dealer property" on the work order when they ask you to sign it. If they whine tell them tough crap. I also put notes on the dash that add "No wash, No Detail".

3. If you are too busy to read 'all those words' on the work order, then you will be miserable with your future. People with short attention spans and an expectation that they will be catered to will likely be simply ignored.

Stop whinging and take some personal responsibility. Or take the position that you shouldnt have to and BMW ought to...see how that works for you. It is not right nor fair, but it is what it is.

PS I see you are now posting on multipe forums about this, and bashing BMW for making 'overly complex cars'.... and still no time to read all those words on your work order?.

Didnt think I was whining, but oh well. I was just speaking from experience - that this wasn't the norm (vs. Lexus, Toyota, Porsche). I'm not sure what my personal responsibility is - I got a new car over a week ago, and I haven't driven it except back from the dealer and to the service depart - do I not have a right to be upset?

In any event, I have read the work order, just not at the time. Also, my frustration is not at the servicing dealer, just with the car. Maybe you are used to having a brand new car go straight into service, but I am not, and I've had 12 cars in the past 10 years. From Porsche to Lexus to GM to our little Prius, I've not had experiences like this- well except for a JCW Mini Cooper which was in and out of the dealer (leaky windows, rattling, intake manifold, etc.)

I had a few issues with my x5 35d at first and after that it has been smooth sailing! I love this car and never get tired of driving it. I am a prior 911 owner and this car is more satisfying to own.

hopefully, ill get the car back by next week. still havent had it for longer than a day. will see all the details when i get the car back, but high level:

bad fuel pressure sensor - replaced. bad "module" to fuel sensor - replaced. several lines were replaced. car still gave check engine lights. testing and conversations with HQ and they decided that they needed to replace the entire wiring harness. needed to be ordered directly from germany (don't ask why, since they are assembled in US - cant you just go pull one off the assembly line?) BMWNA is writing me a check for this month's payment, but is offering nothing else. All part of the same problem as a "first occurence" in their eyes.

Yes, I will bash BMW - yes they are paying a payment, but isn't the right response "well you've had the car for less than a day, why don't you just go get another car?" I dunno, it just seems to make sense...

FYI. Gather all you paperwork and keep track of the conversations you have
with everyone you talk to at the dealer regarding the issues you are having.

Take a look at this information. It may help you to decide if you have a lemon.
