Unhappy 2007 X5 4.8is, 17000 miles, 4X4 error message, over $5000 repair

This is my first post. I really don't know where to get second opinion or help.

My car is 2007 X5 4.8is, bought new and it has only 17000 miles on it.

Recently while I was driving, I had 4X4 and passenger seat belt dysfunction error message. Also the active steering would be disabled as well.

After turning off the vehicle for a while, the vehicle was OK...and had the same problem again.

I got it to one of the dealers.

After a couple of days and over $1500 plus new rear tires for $1300, I got my X5 back. One thing I need to mention is that the service advisor said I needed new rear tires (the front ones were changed a couple of months earlier). If I didn't get new tires, he probably couldn't give me pass on the safety check. I hesitated but wanted to be done with it. So I agreed.

So after $3000, I got my X5 back.

The next day, exactly the same problem occurred!

So the vehicle went back to the shop. And I got an estimate of another $2000-3000 to fix the problem!

My questions:
1. Is it reasonable to be asked to change the tires that had only 17000 miles (normal city driving in warm climate)

2. If the problem was not fixed, does the first time repair cost need to be "refunded"?

3. What would happen if the problem persists after $5000-6000 repair? Would it be another increase of repair cost?

4. The vehicle only has 17000 miles, is it quality problem?

What should I do? Reason with the dealer or contact NA BMW headquarter?

I feel the dealer is trying to rip me off. But I don't really have a sense for. First time to have such high repair bill (warranty expired)

Thank you for helping. I am a full time mom taking care of two young kids. I don't really know cars very well. I was hoping to have a safe and reliable vehicle to drive kids around.

That is really low miles. All the dealers and SA's are trying to rip everyone off. Tires should be replaced with tire shop, not at dealer IMO.
1. It is, but you did not have to agreed.
2. Depends on how you handle the issue, and what it said in your estimate of repaired. You came in for a specific problems, and ended up $3000 out of your package, not to mention problems still persist. I would first discuss with the service manager at this point to correctly fix the problems you first came in for. Ask them if the repaired were directly related to your problems, the answer will be either yes or no and go from there. You've got to be firm and reasonable with them, and not to take their next $3000 advice. If this does not solve the issue then talk to the GM. Find out where to file your next complaint if you have an unresolved questions regarding service.(Department of Consumer Protection in your area)
3. Focus to resolve on 2
4. Hard to say. I don't think BMW will considering a goodwill work on 2007.
Good luck. Come back with resolve.

Hard to say w/o knowing specifics. Were the tires worn out (not unusual for, say, 20" dunlops)? What the initial and new repairs include? The labor rate is smthg like $125/hr or more, so it adds up quickly, unfortunatelly.

first, you've proven to this dealer/SA that you dont know what you are oing and that you are fine with being bent over and abused...

"cannot give you a pass on the safety inspection" so you pay THOUSANDS for tires??!?!?!??! OMFG

You are definitely being lied to. Time to take control of your situation and NOT believe a word the SA is TELLING you. Only believe what is in writing! Hard for people to wrap their heads around it, but the work order and repair orders are the WHOLE record- the verbal lies you can forget about.

The dealer will simply say "well, they had problem A, we tested it and found B, C, D bad and replaced them...and unfortunately problem A remained, so we still get to charge you"

more to follow

1. Stop. Do not approve anything

2. What SPECIFICALLY are they saying will cost $3000. Precise words, what is the defect, the defect code- what test plan was run and what parts are they proposing to replace? Get it from them in writing, post it here.

3. When you bought the car to them with these errors, what codes did they find when they did a diagnostic? Post them.

Finally, let me ask you a question:

IS THE BATTERY IN YOUR CAR ORIGINAL?

Extreme temps in TX can kill them...

one more thing. What SPECIFICALLY did they charge you $1500 for the first visit? What was bad, what codes did they get and was replaced?

(I am guessing this is a bit overwhelming and cars are not your forte...we can help, but the devil will be in the details....)

Thank you for all the replies!

I really appreciate it!

I will collect all the paper work and post here.

But meanwhile I wonder what I should do now: leave the vehicle there?

Another issue is that the parking camera was working but it stopped working after the first repair.

Yes, the battery is the original one.
