NEW MEMBER! 2012 X5 e70 35i sport + common problems

Mom drives a 2013 750li, obviously I got into it and thought damn I need myself a bmw, as that thing is a beast.

Had a 12 c class on lease so passed that to another family member and purchased a 2012 x5 e70 35i /convenience/premium/sport pkg/white on black

Here's the two of them side by side

Some other shots

Overall absolutely loving the car, the only things I've done to it are get the oem floor mats for the front and oem gloss black grille.

Other than that, I came across a few "common problems" of the x5 e70 that I've found many people having issues with

1. Fuel gauge - rushes down like it's guzzling almost leaking fuel from the full marker down to about 3/4 of the way full, then seems to slow down for the rest of the tank.

2. Rear bottom trunk rattle - Managed to temporarily fix this completely with electrical tape on each latch, anyone know of any other more "permanent" way?

3. Comfort access not working - when I bought the car I noted this issue, dealer said I would have to wait another week for them to get the part in/fix it, etc. They said it was a problem with the rear right door handle, anyone else having issues like this?

*when I say comfort access not working--all the unlock/lock functions on the handles don't work, however I don't have to put the key in to start the car(very weird to me when the whole other part of the system is down)

4. Creaking sound in drivers door (heard when music off) - usually hear this when turning right/left sharply, sounds either a creak between plastics or a tiny rolling ball inside the door.

*possibility of 4 and 5 being connected??*

5. Drivers door does not close flush with rest of trim - from a certain angle looks as if the drivers door is about 3mm off from being perfectly aligned with the rear door of the car (passenger side is perfect)

6. Where is my satellite radio? How do I activate it?

7. How do I get the car coded? (I'm on Long Island, NY)

8. Terrible brake squeal - although I've learned how to force myself to break harder in order to not hear it, but consistent with the front driver side of the car - possibly also passenger but haven't had a change to check. No brake light is on - so what could be the issue?

9. Hairline scratches on iDrive screen, looking for a DIY fix, maybe a screen protector? - anybody know about this?

If anybody has any insight to any of these minor issues, it would be really helpful!

***also I should mention, if anybody knows of some easy mods that I could do other than below, let me know please! -- was looking into:

Led fog lights
Led license plate lights
Led interior upgrade
Debadge side of car
Possibly powder coating rims
Body colored plastic trim/front reflectors
Coding
***exhaust tip change to 50i (how to go about this?)
Possible aero kit - is it worth it?

Thanks!

Hello Pete, welcome to the forum.

It is a very nice ride you got there, like the color and the trim...

the fuel gauge is running off logarithmic scale (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Logarithmic_scale; at least some of the other cars had it so). I would not worry about that part, as long as the scale is properly advising you when you are almost empty, and your real MPG is not in single digits...

on the trunk rattle, unless you have something loose inside the cavities, you may check the rubber stops and see if they can be adjusted...

not sure about the convenience package but

your statement that the driver's door is not aligned with the rest of the car brings up a concern that the door may have been damaged/replaced. You should look deeper into this, and while a damaged and repaired/replaced door is not much of a concern for the driving dynamics of the car, it is still a concern of the full disclosure by the dealer... Naturally, the convenience package relies on antennas that are placed inside the door in order to let you in or lock the car, and a separate antenna to recognise that the key is inside to start the engine... there is another antenna on the passenger side of the car - are you able to activate the keyless entry if you are on the passenger side?

the sat radio should appear on your iDrive menu - is it there? you should be able to get the free satellite channel that advertizes the Sirius - if you don't get it, either the module is not there, or, if it is there, there is no power to it... check for the fuses first, and then check to see if the actual module is there... or, vice versa...

for the coding, there are different venues - you do coding yourself, you get a buddy who does it for you, you contact a person who does it for living... there was a fella on this forum who did it, i forgot his screen name, something "tripple X" or whatever...

for the nav screen - get a screen protector, call it a day...

LED fog lights - you mean LED or HID? HID are using the xenon lights with ignition ballasts, the LEDs are the latest in the lighting technology (is it same as lasers???!)

Lets see what others will say about your questions...

Again, welcome to the forum!!!

The alignment issues, rattles, door handle/comfort not working..... all makes one wonder about prior repairs/accident.

When you had the PPI done, did they check for paint/repairs???

Thought the same, looked into it of course before purchasing the vehicle. I still have BMW full maintenance until August 2015 and Certified Pre Owned warranty kicks in then lasting until August 2017.

Checked for paint and repairs and nothing came up, all seems to be factory. The door not being aligned almost looks as if it is some kind of lock adjustment where the metal catch on the car meets the door.

Carfax is also 100% clear. One owner. Bought from BMW Darien CT, and now certified.

Again, welcome to the forum!!!

Thanks a lot! Great insight so far, for the fog lights im thinking an led bulb if possible, if not then I will look for an HID solution.

Haven't seen the satellite radio option available anywhere but I've heard it's pre installed and has to be coded by the dealer, apparently people have been able to get codes through a third party but I will have to look more into this.

Here are two attached photos of what I mean by misalignment of the driver door

Passenger door-perfectly aligned

Driver door - a few mm's off if you compare along the black trim

As far as the keyless entry having to do with the misaligned drivers door-I don't think that's the case, because the keyless entry does not work on all four of the doors. It works only inside the car to start the engine without putting the key in the ignition, as well as with the trunk opening by hitting the button on the trunk when the car is locked.

Thanks again

the door is clearly out of alignment... since the car is certified, the dealer should look into this and properly align it... if their body shop is not going to align the door, you can check into the door hinges to see their condition...

Naturally, the dealer will have to fix the convenience package too, unless it is somehow specifically excluded...

i had a 2011 335xi and 2012 335i with convenience package in each - the key will lock/unlock the car from the driver's and from the passenger's side - you just touch the ribbed part of the door handle. the key has no effect on the locks when trying to use on the rear doors... on the 2012 model there is also the "football kick" to open the trunk feature...

if the car does not lock/unlock from either sides, probably something is wrong at the module level - wiring or the module itself... assuming that the fuses have been checked...

This smells like it's been in an accident. I would get a PPI on it-- don't go by your visual check or Carfax. If it turns out it was, you probably have some recourse since the dealer certified it.

My 2012 x5 Sport Activity has the same issues. I have owned the car since it had 4 miles on it, so I know it was not in an accident. I noticed the door alignment the day I took it off the lot. Additionally, the comfort access on the drivers door quit working about 12 months ago. I just got the car coded and did not feel like doing it again because the service department may default the code once I get the door fixed. I also have the rear hatch noise. The point I am trying to make is that dont jump to conclusions on the vehicle being in an accident. I would be curious to know if the door alignment can be fixed under warranty. Who knows, maybe your vehicle was directly in front of my car on the assembly line. Build date SEP 11

Here is the guy who did the coding. TRIPL_O

He can do remote coding and I think he is from NY. Just send him a FB message on his page and he will hook you up. Highly recommended.

I bought 2012 3.5i a month ago, just looked at my driver's door and it has the same issue, but not as bad.
