New diesel engines for the new X5
Confirmed: BMW Bringing Turbo-Diesel I-4, I-6 Engines to US Market

After the recent death of the 335d sedan, it looked as if BMW’s diesel efforts in the U.S. were relegated to the X5 model line. Not so fast: BMW confirmed today that it will bring a four- and six-cylinder diesel engines to the U.S. market within the next twelve months, and there’s more than a strong chance it could appear in the likes of the 3 Series range once again..

Automobile senior editor Jason Cammisa announced on Twitter early this morning that BMW will bring a 2.0-liter, single-turbo, inline-four-cylinder diesel engine. He added that the engine should make 180 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque. Those specs should sound familiar, because they are: the U.S.-spec engine has an identical output to the 2.0-liter I-4 turbodiesel under the hood of the European-spec BMW 320d sedan and wagon.

BMW also confirmed a twin-turbocharged, 3.0-liter diesel I-6 will be added to its U.S. powertrain portfolio within the same timeframe. Though it sounds similar to the engine presently offered in the X5 xDrive35d and in the old 335d model, it’s an all-new engine, and from the same family as the engine used in the European 330d Touring model. U.S.-market specifications are still being ironed out, but it’s expected to produce close to 255 hp, and a stout 413 lb-ft of torque between 1500-3000 rpm. We hope (and think) this engine is destined for a U.S.-market 3 Series, as it’s capable of pushing the 330d Touring from 0-62 mph in a respectable 5.6 seconds.

BMW says both engines will be paired with eight-speed automatic transmissions, and utilize a urea-based selective catalyst reduction (SCR) system to meet emissions standards. What it hasn’t said, exactly, is what model lines receive what engine, and when. The diesel I-4 is offered abroad in the 1, 3 and 5-Series ranges, along with both the X1 and X3 crossovers. The I-6 is a shoe-in for the large X5, but it could also appear in either the 3- or 5 Series model lines. Another possibility for the I-6: the 7 Series, as Mercedes-Benz recently began selling its diesel-powered S350 Bluetec in North America.

Spied in Death Valley. Camo peeling off one layer at a time. Grill size is out in open

BMW X5 (2014) spied in Death Valley

BMW is certainly giving the new X5 a hard time of it in its pre-reveal testing regime.

We've previously spied the 2014 X5 at rain-soaked Nurburgring, and now captured it testing in Death Valley, USA.
What can we deduce from these BMW X5 spy shots?

Because Death Valley, California is an ideal environment in which to test a car's hot-weather performance, the mule seen here has had some of its frontal camouflage stripped away to allow more airflow into the engine bay.

We can now see the exact shape of the trademark kidney grilles, and the lower vent below them, as well as supplementary apertures in the lower area of the bumper.

Unlike the X5 CAR's spy photographer saw at the rainy 'Ring, which sported rectangular exhaust outlets, this car has smaller, circle-section pipes, perhaps alluding to this being a lower-powered version than that papped before.

When does the new BMW X5 finally emerge?

The F15 (that's BMW model code) X5 will be released in early 2014, and though the exterior styling will take an evolutionary step, the main revisions will be under the skin. BMW's new 'X For All' architecture will be used, as in all futrue BMW X-cars. These advanced underpinnings could cut the hefty X5's weight by up to 150kg against the current model. For comparsion, a current-gen X5 xDrive30d SE weighs in at 2150kg.

If these spy shots really do show a lower-powered X5, it could well be running four-pot power. Sources have confirmed to CAR that a 2.0-litre 245bhp/258lb ft diesel motor will be offered in the new X5. Petrol-devotees can spec the 28i engine from the X1; these four-cylinder X5s will provide a strong rival to the new Mercedes ML250 CDI.

At opposing ends of the moral compass, there'll also be a petrol-electric hybrid, and new versions of the lucrative X5M, which will feature a 565bhp twin-turbo 4.4-litre V8 The ActiveHybrid will team a 3.0-litre turbocharged straight six with a 109bhp electric motor.

We can safely assume the brake dust/dirty wheels issue was not fixed.

I've mistaken a new X3 for an X5 from the front before - I can only imagine that will be more common once this comes out.

Does anyone know if the E70 wheels will be compatible with this next gen X5?

Tough question. My guess is BMW will probably go back to using the 72.5 mm center bore(as in E53 X5), as that what they have used in new F25 X3, X1 and all the other BMWs released recently. But they may also stick to 74 mm....who knows.
