In my opinion (based on the E90's that I have driven) the male voice for the Voice Recognition sounds much much better. If I buy the VR module for my 2005 assist/bt will it be male or female voice? Thanks! -Josh |

Did you add a VR module or did it come with Voice Recognition from the factory?

I think the reason why your 2005 doesn't have VR commands for the phone is because it was manufactured before March of 2005?
Around that time, BMW updated the Bluetooth / Assist modules. They added support for VR commands within the unit itself. This means you dont have to have a seperate VR module, and the commands are spoken with the male voice you have heard. If I was you, just go into your center and say you are having problems connecting to Assist or something .... they will probably replace the unit with a newer one. Chances are that will have VR commands ... I would be suprised if it didn't ! Its ashame BMW dont publicize the mid-year changes they often make ... and you have to find this stuff out trial and error as some of us did ... at our own expense may I add ! |

You are right... I fall into the category you indicated. I'm pretty sure BMW won't replace the module because when they test it there won't be any problems. So if I add the VR module I'll end up with that obnoxious woman voice I had in my '04 that just had BT?

Ok, thanks to the awesome responses from apw, I did some research with my dealer. He has found a part number: 84 10 9 132 711 that is listed as the latest generation BT/Assist Combo Module, it has the VR built in. My question is can I do a direct swap with my current module? I am assuming that the part should just plug in at the place of the old one. Please help! Thanks!!

Yes you can. It will take about 5 minutes to unplug the old TCU and replace it with the new one , and you can easily do this yourself .... however there is a BUT ...
Because it is a Combo BT/Assist module it MUST be coded to your car. The Assist function requires your cars individual VIN # to work correctly. It takes around 15 minutes to code the TCU ... give or take .... (however BMW will charge you a hours labour I'm afraid). |

So I won't have the Assist Function... but I really don't use it, I don't even have a subscription, will it work without that function for just Bluetooth?

Well if the TCU was never coded in the first place, ie. Brand new then YES it still needs coding, even if you don't use Assist or don't subscribe to it.
Just the way it is with these combo TCU's ..... |
