the BTUM was designed for MOST bus 5 and 7 series cars (e60/65) it was not designed for I-bus cars such as your x5

That's what I thought initially, but I know that other X5 owners have this working. For example:

The manual shows installation of the unit in an eject box that looks exactly like the one in my X5. Also, since this emulates a v60, shouldn't this work anywhere a v60 is used?

I am currently trying to find an old v60 that I can use to test the normal functions of the eject box and CPT system...

BMW recently updated their info on the BTUM and it is now approved for use in the following cars:

The funny thing is their installation instructions show different pro-dates.
for the e53 it shows 10/03-10/04
Im not sure which is correct. At least they are officially saying that it works now.

Try holding the button ont he BTUM down for 30 secs solid. this does a reset of the BTUM and may help.

Generally speaking, a BTUM unit will work fine in a CPT9000-equipped 2004+ E53. As DT noted, however, there are build-date guidelines.

You should not have to do any programming of your BT phone or the CPT9000 system. It sounds like your phone is not pairing with the BTUM unit, which is what happened with my first unit (it was replaced under warranty).

The two telephone buttons are not used nor do they offer any other functionality if your car is not telephone-equipped.

The post referenced by PMT was mine from last year. As noted, I had to have it R&R'd by the dealer, after which it worked like a champ.

Well, "worked" is the operative phrase, as it's been in decline for about a month. It began with intermittant voice issues, where I would pair with the unit and try to make a call, but the person on the other end of the call cannot hear me. Then it started exhibiting this problem all the time. I haven't used it in several days - it's a pain to have to hang up, disconnect BT then redial any time I try to make a call. I plan to do the reset on it tonight, and if that doesn't work, then I'll have it looked at again by the dealer.

If your X5 is still under warranty, the BTUm and the CPT9000 system should also be covered under your OEM BMW warranty. Good luck, and be sure to post a reply when you get the system all sorted out.

Thanks for the input, everyone.

I took it to the dealer, and they gave me the BS answer that the TCU in the vehicle does not support Bluetooth and that only vehicles built from 10/04 have Bluetooth capability. I didn't have a chance to follow up on that answer with the tech.

As you can see, the BMW dealers around here all have horrible service. They have some parts on order for another problem and I will be taking it back in soon - probably next week. I will get them to take another look at it then.


In my case the phone and the BTUM appear to pair properly - I see the "BMW BTUM" device on the phone, and the blue LED turns solid, as described in the BTUM manual.

Ater that, nothing else seems to work - I can't control the phone at all with the car controls. I tried the reset procedure a few times (holding the button down for 30 seconds), with no difference.


I am still trying to get a V60i phone so I can hopefully prove to the dealer that the CPT9000 does not work, even without the BTUM. (I'm guessing that's what the problem is ?)


That's funny - as I mentioned, mine actually work. Maybe this has something to do with the BMW assist functionality? ...and sorry to hear you are having problems with yours

Anyway - will keep you posted on my progress with the dealer.
