Navigation issues

The Navigaton System on my 2003 X5 has got some issues. When I started the car this morning the Nav kept saying to wait a moment & then froze on that screen. I ejected the DVD & put it back in & then it kept saying to re-insert the DVD even though it was already in.

I'm not certain but it's either an mk3 or mk4 nav. This happen to anyone before?

Yes. Unfortunately (or perhaps for me fortunately ) it required a new Mk4 Navicomp - swapped under warranty.

The downside was they installed V27.1 over my V26(perspective) OS - so I now have a Nav where it only tells me where I am near, not where I actually am!!

Anyhow, back to your problem. A visit to the dealer may be in order - is your car still under warranty?

What's the problem! V27.1 gives you 3D Perspective! Just press "Menu" then scroll to "Set" or "Settings" & press your knob to select it. Push & hold the "Menu" button for about 8 seconds to enter the GPS Srvice Menu. Scroll beyond the bottom to a 2nd page where you will be given the Perspective Option. Click on Perspective.

Then go back to the main menu. Select "GPS Navigation", "Map Positioning" then select "Perspective" ! Hey Presto.

By the way, if the map disk is a DVD you have a MK IV SatNav.

Um, yes I DO have Perspective mode on - in fact I had to tell the dealer how to enable it.

The issue is that with V27 and above, in the split screen RH pane, you do NOT get your location if you are in a suburb or village. All you get is the NEAREST large town (presumably based on postcode)

That is the issue with V27+ but of course anyone who travels the motorways/freeways between major cities won't see the problem - its only if you goo off onto the minor roads through small villages - something that you have to do a lot in the UK. Therefore if you break down/have a prang, its no good the nav telling you that your location is Main Streen, Bigtown when in fact you are in Main Street, Tinyville (which is a village that just happens to be closeish to Bigtown)

Navteq (Licenced by BMW) have cocked up in a BIG way. You can enter a Postcode but the computer will only allow the first 5 digits. I'ts not very helpful is it?! I can't even find my own house....... I would suggest that you complain to BMW UK - but you won't get very far as their switchboard is staffed by young ladies who have not the faintest clue about cars - & neither have their supervisors . I have personally given up with BMW as their customer service is CRAP!

Agreed. When you consider the cost overhead to get an OEM Nav system as opposed to a TomTom or similar, you rightly expect and should get a top notch system.

I have logged the issue with BMW and they involved my dealer to do some diagnostics on my car and a couple of others on different versions. They have now finally conceded that there IS a bug/issue in the software on V27, V27.1 and V28 BUT they claim it could be 12 to 18 months (yes MONTHS) before a fix comes out!

I threatened BMW with civil action about this as having a system that DID work fine (albeit without perspective officially in V26) and they release software which downgrades the facilities, then in my view the unit was 'not as sold' and unfit for purpose (it's supposed to tell you exactly where you are, not where you are near).

I might add that the Operating System Software (V27/28 etc) is supplied by Siemens VDO BV (Dutch). Navteq (N.American) supply the map disks. DO NOT BE TEMPTED to upgrade from V27/27.1 to V28!!! V28 is only claimed to fix some hardware issues such as the SatNav flap not closing. It has no mapping changes over V27/27.1. You could seriously F**K up your system & end up with a blank screen which will cost you upwards of £1200 to have replaced. Ladies & Gentlemen - DON'T DO IT.
