Sat Nav problem - blank screen
 I have a 2002 BMW e39 530i auto with the widescreen nav / tv. I don't know model name he satnav is know as, but it is this one: ToysInYourCar.com - 16:9 Widescreen - 5 E39 7 E38 The issue is that the screen has stopped working. It was all working fine until it 'flickered' off a couple of times before coming back on again. Now it remains off, a black screen. It did come on half way through my journey for a few seconds before going blank again. Since then, nothing.  The unit itslef still works. The orange LED still comes on, the radio still works and I've heard the charming satnav voice in the background - just no screen. So, any ideas? Hope it's not 'new unit' time. I'm not that technical but it feels like a loose connection or simply the the back light to the screen has packed up?  Any thoughts / ideas / things to try and test most welcome before I surrender by credit card to a specialist. Thanks, Matt

It could be several things
1. the screen itself is starting to flake out (I think this is the least likely cause) 2. the nav drive (where you load the map CD) is going bad (most likely cause) 3. the wiring or connections to the screen or nav drive are loose (not likely, but easiest to check and fix if a connector is simply loose). If you have someone near you with a Mk3 or Mk3 nav drive then I would suggest swapping units to see if the the trouble follows or clears.  and :xoutpost:

I took the screen apart and pulled a few fuses to try and re-set the system, but it made no difference.
Turns out it was the Traffic Master system. These were not specced from the factory. It was a UK option and retro-fitted in when the cars arrived at the docks in Crewe. I just ripped it all out as I never used it anyway. And everything now works perfectly! I have Nav and a TV again!!

This sounds very similar to mine, do you know if your was the backlight or the unit was just black. Mine has exactly the same symptoms except that I found in direct sunlight or when I shine a torch on it, I can see the lcd screen a little bit. How did you rip out the traffic master system? Did you take it to someone and did it start working straight after?

Have to admit I didn't take it out myself. I mentioned it to my indy garage when the car was in for a service.
He just took it all out and tidied it up. Think he charged me about £40 for the time it took him to do it. And yes, it worked straight away afterwards. He advised me that the Traffic Master was a simply horrid bit of kit and should always be got rid of asap as it's often responsible for all sorts of electrical issues. Cheers, Matt

Ive been trying to find someone to look at it in my area and all the guys I take it to have no idea and suggest getting a new unit which is going to cost me a fortune.
I dont suppose you live in london and could give me the contact details of your guy? Im in bermondsey.
