No sound from the av input

I have an e46 with retrofitted navigation.

I've also added an OEM video module to get video in, and I use an iPhone with Apple A/V-cable.

The problem is that I can't get any sound from it. The picture works great, but the sound are missing. Earlier the display just typed "mute", but after I got som better connectors this dissapered, but still no sound.

I've tried to switch between the wires all sort of ways, but still no sound.

Anyone know what could be wrong?

Wired the AV correctly?

The video module is mono audio.
The ipod uses non-standard 3.5mm connections - so be wary!

As your car would not have had an AV socket, you must have wired the AV-in yourself.

My guess is you have mixed up the audio wires and swapped ground and signal around.
Or connected to wrong pins on the video module.

The pins are correct, an I have tried to swap signal and ground. I've tried almost every combination there is. I know the iPhone is sending sound, and that the A/V cable works fine. I don't use the 3.5mm, but a Apple A/V cable.

I tried some more, and when I turned the volume knob on the radio to the max I could barely hear the sound from my video, with a lot of "shhhhh".

I think this maby could have something to do with grounding, but I can't figure out where.

Definitely sounds like there is either a short on the audio line (short to ground) or you have signal and ground swapped around. Get your multimeter out and measure it.

I did what you say earlier, and here is the results.

I measured every cable, but they all seems fine, so that isn't the problem. When I measured the audio input on the radio module, it was around 700 ohms. I also tried to switch between ground and signal and noticed that the sound are exactly the same. I can hear the sound from the video, but no different from when it's connected as it should be. I found this a little odd. Could it be that the video module is defect or something? The nav sound that goes in to it are all ok.

Test your video unit as follows:

Disconnect audio input from the video module

Switch to AV with a video signal present
Turn the volume up loud
Touch your finger to the AV-audio in pin (use eg paperclip to make contact

You should hear a buzz/click/crackle/hum etc - any old noise. If so, audio in is OK.

No extra sound when I did this, not even with the volume on maximum. However when I connected back the iPhone there's still sound from the video when the volume is at max, but it's so low that I can barely hear it.

I read somewhere that the video source should be grounded to the car, but when I took the USB end of the Apple A/V cable to ground there wasn't any difference.

Yes, video should be grounded, HOWEVER this varies by video module age and also if your iPhone is being charged by the car, then the iPhone video is already grounded.

Time for you to describe your schematics... pinx to piny to RCA plug shield etc etc

I have an AV input/output builtin in my X5, bought a 3.5mm jack AV cable and tried it with my ipod video and iphone 3G i have sound coming when tv is switch to AV but no picture on both, do i need to program this? Can i use NavCoder to program?
