BMW Navigation System Map Updates

Wonder if this is what we'll use to get updates. Considering I bought a 2009 X5 and there have been no updates to the maps that came with it, I would assume they would fix that issue or risk a lot of brand damage.

Yes my 2006 X3 maps has 2009 maps purchased which are really 2008 un updated maps. Funny too that I opened a "ticket" with NavTeq and the ticket was closed within 30 days with a blanket non serving response.

I currently use both NAV units (E46 and E83) mostly in the 10000 foot view just to guage a relative position and use my MSMobile phone with IGo for granular details.

I guess I could just drop a nice TTS font / GPS application on my car PC to get "built" in use of my in car NAV display totally by passing the NAV OS/Maps.

Not yet. I wrote to them saying they should list a version or release date on their web site, and they wrote back:

I am happy to inform you that all of the DVD map update versions are 2010 and were released approximately 2 weeks ago. The part number for the BMW - North American Map DVD - High Version is 65902158161 which contains 2 DVD's.

If we can be of any further assistance, please contact us via email or call directly 1-866-543-6848.
That part number isn't showing up in the BMW parts system yet - when it does, it might be possible to purchase the maps for less from one of the dealers that offers Internet and/or BMWCCA discounts.

Interesting information. On the phone they said that it is 1 DVD for the High Version and p/n 65-90-2-158-157. Weird.

Here's an explanation I read on an M5 Forum from a guy who works at a dealership.

Quote:
"For DVD high there are two discs in the pacakage. One is for western US and all of Canada 2nd one is eastern US and all of Canada."
I wonder if the complete package is part number 65.90-2 158 161, but one of the individual DVDs is part number 65.90-2 158 157. Who knows, until we can lay hands on one.

Either way, this kind of sucks. It will be OK for me, because I am on the east coast. It will be a royal pain for those near the boarder of the two DVDs. Going to a single disk is one of the major reasons why I upgraded to the single-disk MKIV. I got tired of driving across map disk regions.

The CD maps tended to have a reasonable amount of overlap in full coverage (150 miles or more) and had major roads for out-of-area regions.

I don't know why there would need to be 2 discs, as the old NAVTEQ map was well under the single layer capacity of a DVD. It would be bizarre if the MK IV drive can't read double layer discs. And the latest TomTom TeleAtlas North America map is less than 2GB unpacked. However, the TomTom and the MK IV use a different data format, so that isn't entirely a fair comparison.

Yeah makes little sense given the last nav update (v32) provided for double layer functionality you'd think they'd use it.

The North America disk set covers all of Canada, USA, and Mexico. Maybe they really increased the database massively?

Correction: v31 introduced double layer functionality.

It is probable that most of the MK IV computers are running older software. The BMW dealer instructions for the software update disc say "only upgrade in the event of a customer complaint". It isn't something that's done as part of a scheduled service visit, either.

So, you'd get people bringing in their cars saying that the navigation isn't working. Best case, people would be paying $100+ in out-of-pocket labor expense for the update (I've never found a dealer that would charge less than 1 hour for a paid service visit, though a number of dealers will "freebie" stuff like light bulb changes, NAV software updates - for MK IV cars only, updating the CCC version takes hours). Worst case, a few customers will be told that their NAV computer is broken and they need a new one. Either by a dealer who didn't hear about maps requiring V32, or by an unscrupulous dealer.

Once TeleAtlas settles in as the regular BMW map provider, maybe they'll include a coupon for a software update at the dealer or even supply the V32 update as part of the map package - it's only $10 or so from the dealer, anyway. But that will probably depend on how much feedback they get from customers who don't want to swap map discs back and forth.

Can anyone confirm this? What is thew cost difference between buying both and buying only 1 DVD?
