Replaced BM53 radio module - Now TCU isn't recognized by car or NavCoder
All was working with the TCU before--in fact, I had enabled voice recognition with NavCoder when he first installed the TCU... Anyhow, after some looking at junkyards / ebay, we decided that the easiest way to get an updated BM53 radio, was to buy one from Tischer and trade in the old one as part of the core. This is the BM53 model I bought: 65126988276. RealOEM.com BMW E46 330i ON BOARD MONITOR RADIO . The module plugged right in (a direct swap), and the radio / Sirius work great. The only issue is that "Telephone" has disappeared from the Nav menu screen. When I try to read the TCU in NavCoder, "Code Phone" is grayed out and it shows up as an unrecognized device. Any suggestions? Do you think the BM53 radio needs to be coded? Thanks! |

I would think that yes it needs to be coded to the TCU.

I tried this with NavCoder but was unable to do so... Is this a dealer programming necessary you think?
Thx! |

Yeah I really think so unfortunately. Check with Kiwi for a more definitive answer though.

The navigation detects the TCU is alaive and displays the TELEPHONE menu based on the "heartbeat" of the TCU being received So check and double check the TCU has power, and has ibus connected. Do a battery reset. |

Radios do need to be car coded.

Not really, nothing changes in the radio regardless of the car
The only vital point is to set the AREA, but you'd do that anyway. |

Ahhh... Let's I assume I didn't set the area in the radio. How do I do this? Radio service mode? BTW, I just pulled my 11th generation ULF from my e46, plugged it into this car instead of the ULF, and the system still is not seeing "telephone." I know that both of these modules are good as they both work fine in my car... Any idea what to check next? Thx |

Oh, I found an old post of mine with Radio Service Mode instructions... I will try this when I see the car later today and report back.
OEM instructions to enter Radio Service Mode to change region: http://www.bigpatsfans.com/radio_service_mode.pdf BM53 withWidescreenMonitor AFTER 9/01 1. Turn the radio on. 2. Immediately press and hold the 'Select' button for at least 8 seconds. The screen will switch to Service Mode. 3. The screen will now show the serial number of the radio. 4. Use the "< >" buttons to select the desired service function. 5. Selections for the desired service function can be made by using the radio station preset buttons #1-6. 6. Turn the radio off to leave the service mode. NOTE: When selecting the country AREA, push the station preset #1 repeatedly until AREA USA is shown on the screen. When selecting the GAL level, use station presets #1-6 to select level. To turn off/on the RDS function on this radio, push the 'INFO' button and select RDS off/on |

Ditto (almost) everyone else...
The radio has no affect on the TCU or ULF. So, double-check all of the wiring around the telephone module. I have a hunch that you disrupted something while upgrading the radio. There is no coding for the radio. I am certain of this. However, as Kiwi says, and you are doing, set the area. Still, I can not imagine any way that the Area would affect the TCU. That just enables certain features-- the fact that Sirius works suggests that Area is already set to USA.
