right now my setup is fed through regular wall warts but once i zip everything up, i will hardwire those ebay units... i am still doing fine tuning... i am looking into that MimixsX2 unit for the touch screen overlay - the unit itself is cool but the seller is not... i am trying to see if there is an alternative on the market... |

Found them, thanks. I am doing my final fine tuning also. I am happy that my IPhone's charger is keeping up with the power it needs while connected to the NAV. Let me know what you find out about the MimixsX2 unit. I will be very interested in hooking that bad boy in my nav screen.

Term,
I was reading about the Apple TV and how I could supply it with power. I found an article that talks about connecting a DC/DC Converter 12V Step Down to 5V 3A Power Supply, since the required power for the motherboard is 3.4V @ 1.75A. Apple TV 2nd Generation Teardown - iFixit On Step 13, it says "The sticker on the power supply has this rating: 3.4V @ 1.75A, that's just 5.95 watts!" Do you think that I can use one of this, Amazon.com : KEEDOX® DC/DC Converter 12V Step Down to 5V 3A Power Supply Module : Electronics, and still be good?

well, that power supply in your link is rated at 5V and you said that the iphone calls for 3.4... on the sticker at the link i see there is an option for a 3.7V unit - is such a unit available?
I do not know if the iphone can be powered by a 5V power supply but if the supplied voltage is greater then the system can take, it will burn the phone... The USB computer port supplies 5V DC at 0.5 A maximum, and since the iphone can be charged by the USB cable without any additional circuitry inside that cable, I would say that a 5V DC power supply should be sufficent... What happens in those electronics, they need power supply that is a bit greater than the voltage of the battery, so the battery can charge... the battery voltage varies depending on the load and the state of the charge, from 3V to 4.5V and the phone has internal power regulator that will regulate the voltage applied to the chip, but the input voltage for the internal regulator inside the phone is within smaller brackets (say, 3 to 7 V DC), as bigger voltage brackets call for more heat dissipation... Now, the other issue is, if the power supply is capable of holding the 5V steady while the phone is "drinking" the amperage - if the power demand of the phone is great, the amperage draw is high, and the 5V can not be sustained, and the voltage drops below 5 V nominal, and at one point drops below the battery level threshold, at which point the charger stops charging... That is my problem, therefore I am looking for a more powerful charger that will hold the 5V steady while supplying higher amperage... supposedly, a GSM standard calls for no more than a 2.5A of internal power consumption (which may or may not include the smart phone functions!). A 3A power supply proved to be insufficient, so I bought components to built an 8A power supply, which should hold 5V steady at 4-5A draw... we'll see how that thing comes along... to be honest, i would not pay $8 for something that could be had for $3 Waterproof DC DC DC Converter 12V Step Down to 5V 3A 15W Power Supply Module | eBay another thing - this unit in your link is a direct wire, meaning that you will need to source an iphone power cable/iphone connector and wire it up... you may want to consider a USB variant of the same power supply, and just get a USB to iphone cable that is sold everywhere... functional diagram.
MimicsX2 device is untested and therefore should NOT be considered as being endorsed. a fellow on mp3car.com will do the updated testing and I will update this info as it becomes available. Last edited by TerminatorX5; 01-18-2014 at 03:36 PM. Reason: updated info on MimicsX2 device |

Term, I am still working on the IPhone hardwiring. Is the MimixsX2 working as promised, OEM screen is now a touchscreen?

I do not wish to risk $250 for a questionable product, but I like the promise of the product so far - thus i included the mimicsx2 into the diagram, as a way to do this phone integration... come to think about this - we do have board members from down under... i wonder if any of them has heard about the mimicsx2 guy from australia... oh, and my set up is not finished either - i have serious issues with the power requirements for the Android phone - it drains the life out of the battery in a matter of one-two hours, even when connected to a power source... makes it unusable... i am not sure if this is just my specimen of the phone, or it is generic problem of most android phone... i would be happy if it did not lose the power while connected to the power supply - thus looking for a more powerful sources... i have components to build an 8 Amp supply, but maybe will buy a ready-made unit for 5 Amps first, to test drive it... |
