Your mk4 has a ignition or i-bus power fault, it does not detect when the cars ignition and/or i-bus start, holding the button, forces the nav to power up as it "thinks" that you want to eject the map disc.

I'd say its faulty mate, get another one, unless you know a good electronics engineer to find and then fix the problem.

On another forum I found this regarding the black screen of the mk4:

"The problem is a tiny in-line surge protector (like 20mA or something). It's inside a small, rectangular box in the cables that connect your Nav system. Basically, I had to cut the wires (two, IIRC) to remove the box and then used a multimeter to determine where the fault lie.
It should be inline with the blue and red/purple plugs shown in your picture. It's likely covered in cloth tape like the rest of the harness. It's less than 3/4" thick and about 2-3 long x 1" wide. But I don't REALLY recall the dimensions."

Can anyone tell me if if there really is that tiny "box" on the navi wires?

We in the uk dont have the in-line surge protector loom (box) so I cant say for sure, the surge box was mostly used in the USA not Europe as BMW USA were sick of replacing nav units when the power was incorrectly disconnected by service departments and garages that did not follow the power down procedure.

The in-line surge protector loom was mostly on mk2 and mk3 units too as the mk4 copes better.

So, after testing the car with BMW Scanner, INPA and DIS, it looks like my MK4 module stops working because of the phone module. If I disconnect the phone module, the MK4 navi works fine. I've attached a video with my MK4 where you can see how the system reacts on the phone module scan. Now I have unplugged the phone module so that I could use the navi.
I will check as well the phone module to see whats is happening with it.

Thanks for the follow up, I've never seen that one before, Good find.

Ive not seen this before with a phone module, but I have seen it before with the TV module, I'm not sure why the phone would do this unless it took the mk4 base i-bus address or has a faulty i-bus chip and its ibus in being corrupted.

Good find.

This weekend I will do a thorough scan with DIS V57 (now I have the V52 one), to see if I can figure out where the problem originates . And maybe I 'll find a colleague with E39 to check my GSM module in his car, to see if it is damaged or the wires have breaks somewhere.
This diagnosis tool spared me of great expense and a very big headache.

So, with INPA I have scanned the GSM module, IKE module, LWR module, LCM module, and when i check the status of those modules, the MK4 starts working.
Like in the videos:

Can anyone tell me whats the problem? Whats else should I check? I' ve checked all the wire harness in the trunk, and all it's ok.

Hmmm, I'm tempted to say that one of the modules is faulty (the phone module when disconnected makes the mk4 work ok??) and while the test in in place it takes priority on the ibus (which makes it work).

Thats a guess though.

I'd start by replacing modules till it works reliably.

I've disconnected the phone module, the MK4 doesn't work.
I read this article://BMW-Projekte/I-Bus Informationen and I think I have a problem with the I BUS signal, and I want to check the Instrument Cluster on another E39, to see if it's ok or not.
I will try a full reset of all car electronics to see if there will be any changes.

Hello.

I'm exactly the same situation and I've tried a bit of everything .
In my case the DVD was blocked , but the eject light flashes.

Already removed the DVD manually.

Someone managed to solve this situation putting the software?
