Hmm...the whole "in a restaurant thing" is ok, but really overused, especially in movies and on tv. An idea is to go to www.theknot.com and read some of the couples' proposals. TheKnot.com is a website for couples to put their wedding info, registries, etc and there are sections they fill out with how they met and "how he popped the question."

Just make sure when you do it, its not going to sound corny when she has to repeat the story over and over again to everyone who asks, "How did he propose!" (unlike mine!)

Every year since we been going out we've gone to Victoria BC for my wife's birthday. It just happened that way for the first few years and we just decided to make it a tradition. At the time we were both into the Martini craze and we were in a restaurant that was known for their color coded Martini menu. We were in a drinking mood and ended up going through all the colors (I think it was 8 or 10). Being quite drunk and giddy I asked her to marry me and she said yes. Next morning she didn't remember anything about the proposal. I said I wasn't going to ask her twice. A week later she realized I was serious when I showed her my design for our wedding rings and told her I already contacted a custom jeweler to make them. She was quite elated because she originally thought I was pulling a gag on her.

The proposal just sort of happened without any planning. It wasn't grand or elaborate but I have no regrets about the way it happened. Once in a while I catch her with a smirk on her face and a twinkle in her eye when we go out and I suggest we order Martinis. I guess where I'm going with this is that sometimes the special part of a special occasion happens much later. Whatever you do, big or small, the way you feel about her will come through so don't sweat it!

BTW, we don't drink 10 Martinis in restaurants anymore.

That sort of begs the question doesn't it? Out with it!

How's about a baseball game with your proposal on the Jumbotron? Red Sox, Mets, or Yankees?

What about a plane carrying a banner? Or maybe hire a sky writer (doesn't work on windy days)?

I'm with Ray on his idea: a shared hobby/interest/activity...

I think the rest/rooftop/"staged" deal is way too schmultzy
and B Movie-like and pretty corny.

Think about what you two really have enjoyed "doing" in your
time together and courtship, (besides That!), and maybe cook
up a more "over the top" version of that hobby/activity.

I think the sincere asking and acceptance is very personal
and doesn't really need to "be done" in some staged/psuedo-romantic
arena or some semi-public place; this is a proposal of Marriage, not
a 50th birthday party or work get together.

NYC is the finest city on the Planet, imo...so, maybe there is
some hook/connection for your situ...but, think about that
in terms of one on one, not some staged affair.
My 2Cts and Congrats!

i suggest getting dinner down the street from it, and just walk up to the promade, its not very crowded at all after 9ish. On a clear nite ur jaw will drop.
