I disagree. If this is the case, why do we have much higher rates of diseases like HIV and hepititiis B than most other countries? Oh yeah...most diseases and illnesses are indeed contagious.

And yes, mental health does affect others. How many murders or assults are committed by mentally ill people? I'd say quite a few.

I think there are many similarities between health care and first responders. Both exist to protect the population AND individuals from danger. Illness and injuries should be included.

Uninformed statement.

We are 41st in the world (2005/06 data):

AIDS Data

Also, notice that countries 48-on aren't even reporting their rate. I have my assumptions, you will undoubtedly make your own.

I wouldn't know - ask a cop. Or wait, murder is a crime. Looks like law enforcement again.

I know you're wrong.

Sorry...I didn't mean to imply higher than most countries in the world. I meant higher than the ones we were talking about, which are those with socialized medicine. Check out the European countries. Check out Cuba and Canada on your list. Why do we have higher HIV rates thant hey do?

BTW, almost all of those 48 countries that don't report their rate do NOT have socialized medicine. Most of them are poor Middle Eastern and Central Asian Islamic countries who I'm guessing don't even keep track of that stuff.

Venezulea (#40)

So you're going to hold out a 0.3% variance (Canada - 0.3, USA - 0.6) as significant? Do you even know what the difference in population is between the US and Canada? We have TEN TIMES the population they do. To be that close tells me we're doing quite well, thanks.

Do you understand what the chart represents? Apparently not.

They don't "keep track of that stuff" because of their religion - it would be offensive to admit that the religion of peace didn't prevent behaviors that can lead to AIDS.

Wanting to take care of the sick and injured is completely different than having the results of your labor taken at gunpoint.

Or you could move, and we could all live in peace, happy with our healthcare. :nanana:

Nobody is taking the results of anyone's labor at gunpoint. There are simply regulations that industry must follow.

When FCC regulations cause a certain electronic device to not be approved, are they taking that company's profit by gunpoint?

When the FDA fails to approve a drug, are they taking that company's profit by gunpoint?

Here's one in my industry: When the government copyright royalty board sets the statutory rate for mechanical licenses, are the taking a songwriter's profit by gunpoint? (this a reguation that allows a band to "cover" another band's music)

A car example: When the government told Lotus that the Elise did not pass safety regulations and forced them to redesign it so that it would, were they taking profits by gunpoint from Lotus?

Or do you prefer the good ol'e days when I could put whisky in a bottle, label it as a pain killer, advertise that it works better than asprin, and make a fortune. Surely nobody would be stealing my big profit by gunpoint.

Why? I'm fine with our health care system.....and it isn't going to get socialized in the next 30-40 years. I don't think posts on the Internet will persuade congress either.

rebound 07-03-2007 07:54 AM

First and foremost, you dodged my proof that our AIDS rate isn't anywhere near as bad as you attempt to make it sound.

You must have a big pond out back to have so many red herrings.

Now you're trying to tell me that regulations are the same as socialism? Sorry. One is setting and enforcing standards for the protection of people and their creative efforts (there's that "common defense" again, dang it), while the other is the confiscation of profits deemed "excess" by some governmental body. These "excess" profits are then redistributed to the losers of life's lottery, regardless of their efforts in life.

The "gunpoint" is the fact that this would be backed by laws, thereby making it a crime to not give up the results of your labor. The cops could roll in on you and arrest you. Get it yet?

In case you doubt it - check out this story:
New Hampshire Standoff

Keep in mind, I'm not saying I agree with that couple, I'm just saying that the government has determined that they're naughty, and is going to enforce that ruling at the point of a gun, if necessary. Of course, the delicious irony of that story is that it's over taxes... Get it yet?
