Nevermind I figured it out, but heres a few questions I have... one is: how can I add a text to the main menu? I want to install a carputer and would love a button in there to access it... Let me know if you can help me!

There are lots and lots or Rover MK3 units out there with locked firmware (a crippled version 17). If you try to use a BMW update CD it spits them out.
I guess the boot loader or something on the CD does not match, I can get hold of a Rover firmware CD and you have no idea how incredibly useful it would be if we could upgrade Rover units to turn them back into the BMW MK3 equivalents they probably once were.

I think I know enough about the OS9000 to be able to do this, if you want to contact me with some details.

I am also working on converting the BMW MK4, back to a VDO Dayton.

Odia.

The better way is to convert VDO Dayton software to work on BMW :)

That sounds good
Which VDO system will it be?
And you're hacking the V28-firmware with OS9000-tooling?
I'm very interrested in this part as well, as I don't like the current MK-IV system at all! The navtweak programm is nice however it does not really alter the functions of this system...

My reference is a Garmin Streetpilot 2610 which I used in my previous car!
I just got my new car (Z4) with the build in satnav pro....
I know now that the Garmin is way superiour compared to the MK-IV system!
Especially the Graphical representation, routing and usability!
I have a big list of thing I would see different in my current Z4 satnav system. Maybee I could do it myself..... or together with others owners!

Cheers,

Rene

So how did the guy with the dwarf do?

Timiboy

Sure can!

All of the POI icons are now stored on the DVD (as GIF images) in the following locations (note that this is for the 2007-1 NA DVD):

...\TPD\nccBus_na_20060613\ICONS\N

...\TPD\nccBus_na_20060613\ICONS\R

Thus, all one needs to do is simply replace the images (retaining the same file name, file format, and image size, of course) with the new ones that they want to use instead (e.g. smaller colored versions, etc.).

I'm not sure what the difference is between the "N" and "R" folders as they appear to contain the exact same images/icons.

I hope this helps some.

I tried to extract data/images out of the navboot from the current OS MO5712 for MS5700 (3D map) distributed by VDO to use embedded images in the BMW Navi SW. The BMW Navi SW should be only a modification of the VDO OS.

But Navtweak only reads/displays the part "Modules".

Is it possible that Navtweak displays the information regarding "Modules" but isn't capable to show existing "Images"? Or is it the case that this navboot includes no images, because otherwise Navtweak would have they displayed?

If you need the navboot to answer my question I can send it to you by email.

Kind regards,

Matthias

From my experience, it appears that VDO Dayton is storing the rom_col_x, romicons, Lng_x, font, etc. modules in a file named "usw_modules" instead of in the "navboot" file (as they do for BMW/MINI). However, when I try opening the "usw_modules" file with NavTweak, it allows me to view, save, and replace all of the individual modules, but it doesn't load up the Images or Colors (it does for the Stings and Fonts though).

It would be nice if we could get at the icons and color sets in that file as I'd like to update BMW/MINI's color set and 3D arrow cursor with the ones from the VDO Dayton firmware (as they look better IMHO).

I don't have access to the MS5700 firmware, but there is public access to the most recent MS5200 firmware (which appears to have all of the new goodies from the MS5700) on the VDO Dayton web site here:

Application Software Update PC 5200 Version 2.50 (48.9 MB)

Maybe nomad would be willing to have a look at it in his spare time?

I hope this helps some.

EDIT: BTW, it appears that in this new firmware update for the MS5200, VDO Dayton has enabled street names to show up in 3D perspective view. I sure hope that they do this for the BMW/MINI firmware as well. This is the one thing that stops me from using the 3D view. More details here:

New Features In Version 2.50

Also, for those who don't already know... VDO Dayton is the company that builds the nav computer for BMW/MINI. The BMW/MINI MKIV is based upon the VDO Dayton MS5500 Monitor Navigation system I believe. Thus, it should (in theory) be possible to adapt the VDO Dayton firmware to run on the BMW/MINI On-Board Navigation system. This would be pretty cool since the VDO Dayton firmware has a lot of nice features that aren't available in the BMW/MINI version like Via Points, Saved Routes, the ability to display up to 5 icon types on the map at any one time, warning sounds when near a specified POI, etc., etc.

SatNav 11-01-2006 07:35 AM

Just for the record, the BMW/MINI SatNav OS is produced by Siemens VDO BV (Dutch). Search their site...

TheOfficeMaven 11-01-2006 10:50 AM

Same company isn't it???

I thought that VDO Dayton was a subsidiary of VDO Siemens.

If you search the VDO Dayton site they also claim that they make the OEM nav system for BMW.

EDIT: Yes, just as I suspected, VDO Dayton is a brand name of VDO Siemens. See here:

http://www.siemensvdo.com/press/rele...0411_002_e.htm

So technically I was correct (but then again, so were you)! :nanana:
