This virus might be a good thing long term for the country. A bit of a wake up call if you will. Life has gotten too easy/comfortable and complaining about the smallest things has gotten to be a real problem because of it. Some hardship might be good (as a whole).

I've seen more people helping others than I have in a long time. More understanding, more patience, more tolerance. Granted I live in Texas (as do others on this forum) where people generally are nicer to begin with. I'm interested to know if it's the same around the country, so if other members could chime in that would be great.

This highlights the US' lack of manufacturing and reliance on China (and others) for certain goods. As mentioned, lack of preparedness and flaws in the political system that hamper the country's ability to respond quickly and appropriately.

To clarify, no I don't think it's GOOD that this has happened on an individual basis. Going to be horrible for many (probably millions when you factor in the financial aspect) for possibly the next 12-18 months. But it might be "good" to have a reminder that things/life can change very quickly and that everyone is in this together, "in the pursuit of happiness." As campfire, kumbaya as that sounds.

For everyone's information, the "Spanish Flu" isn't at all "Spanish" or from Spain. If it were to be named according to the region it originated from, it would've been called the USA Flu. But it was deflected away from the USA in an effort to project a better image for the country.
That Flu originated in USA and went to Europe with American soldiers fighting in WWI. Then it was diagnosed and identified as new and unique strain by smart doctors in Spain. No one wanted to call it the American Flu for fear of associating America with diseases.
So you see, people knew even 100 years ago that association of disease with regions does have racist, negative image, and negative impact on reputation and economies. Even with that good knowledge they still thought it would be okay to dish it out but not okay to take it.

Human nature. We push the blame and responsibility to others so we appear above it all. Could this be a self-preservation strategy that is hard-wired into our DNA?

Homo sapiens won't evolve into a better species as long as this negative trait remains.

May I present to you the many selfless doctors and nurses in this country who are risking their lives with insufficient protection gears, bravely fighting on the front lines to defeat this virus.

They should be the ones we aspire to.

Did you get that from CNN, NPR, or MSNBC? I fully expect all of those channels to choose the America-hating version any time the facts are not 100% clear.

The truth is that the origin is very much unknown. Yes, the army base in Kansas is one of the candidates. China is too. Spain is not.

Since it spread during WWI, reporting in countries involved in the war suppressed reporting on it in fear of hurting morale. Neutral Spain, not being in the war, was free to report closer to the truth, so with much of the reporting coming from Spain, the disease itself seemed to be concentrated in Spain, and the name stuck.

USA was not trying to deflect blame in a racist way. We were saving the world.

CDC numbers for USA as of Friday (updated weekdays only)
https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019...ses-in-us.html

201 deaths
15,219 confirmed cases

201 ÷ 15,219 = 1.32% (math)

As for Italy you will find that in addition to having a much older population than the USA they report ANY death at a hospital with coronavirus as a coronavirus death as stated here by an Italian official:
https://www.telegraph.co.uk/global-h...ts-died-italy/

You will find that (deaths ÷ by confirmed cases × 100) will give you the percentage of mortality. I am one of those people who must use a calculator and that the numbers I posted are correct.

The percentages will be differ by country, any statistics are not final and there are concerns about accuracy in every case. There should be no debate about the seriousness of the virus as any degree of justification for not following the guidelines to minimize the spread of the virus.

FYI, I have found that listening to the press conferences of the Governor of New York to be the most informative, straight forward, clear and blunt perspective.

Gov. Cuomo is doing a fantastic job. He has stepped right up to the plate.

I believe that I added (USA) or (Italy), et3 after numbers and percentages, but if not then I apologize for not being clear.

But I do want some people to understand that the USA numbers arenfrom the CDC and where possible I have provided links or searchable data and people's feelings mean nothing when facts are used.

Now about the Chinese coronavirus.... You will see it listed that way at first solely due to standard naming conventions but since China has publicly announced that the United States spread the virus in Wuhan to discredit their BS4 facility (known as an attempted genocide accusation) something that should piss off any American solely for that BS but they should not get upset over the tit-for-tat (aka diplomacy) reminder of where it came from unless Americans would rather turn this into a straight up pissing match with China till we fight a war.
I don't know about anyone else but I have fought in almost every single conflict since Just Cause in 89 till I got my desk job and assignment to Ft. Living room in 2013 and I'm tired, but if need be I'll be back to slitting throats but I'll have to drive there cause screw walking anymore!!!
I only refuse to accept that people would rather forgo Trump's style of "diplomacy" and risk war just because he is unliked except by most muslim countries because as they say "he will deal fair" in Arabic it is said "over the camel's nose".

I do agree about there being racist dicks out there and each of my kids were born abroad Panama, Philippines and Saudi Arabia so I know about being around racist dicks and being the minority but I don't believe we must pretzel our words or logic just to keep folks from having to be grabbed by their stacking swivel for being little twatwaffles.

Lift and shift fire feelings in the open.

Addressing residents ignoring official orders by congregating outside, Cuomo said Sunday: 'This is just a mistake. It's a mistake. It's insensitive, it's arrogant, it's self-destructive, it's disrespectful to other people, and it has to stop. It has to stop now.'

Very powerful message. Let's see if the New Yorkers take notice.
