FYI-If one chooses to take supplemental vitamin D it should be limited to 600 IU per day, especially if taken for more than a few months.Too much vitamin D can cause other problems.

Everyone should check with their GPs. Mine recommended 1000 IU.

According to the ominously titled source below 4000 IU daily is considered the upper limit of safe but a general recommendation of 600 - 800 IU daily was given. If you have other health conditions listed in the article you might want to avoid altogether. Didn't see any mention of limiting to a few months.

I had to stop taking Vitamin D based on blood work. To understand why I went to the Mayo clinic website. I'm sure there are lots of differing recommendations that was just my source. Being a Harvard alumnus, feel free to scrap the Mayo clinic info. To date any benefits of of Vitamin D have not been verified by a accredited study but if one knows they have a vitamin D deficiency it should be corrected anyway.

That's the reasoning behind the supplements. A large portion of the US population had been found to be vitamin d deficient. I don't remember the statistic but I'm sure I could find it. I was advised to take it based on bloodwork. NM, 42%

I'll have to look into the benefits of vitamin d above nominal levels. I know I've seen references to it being necessary for certain functions of the body. Protein production? Or absorption of something? Will add some info later (whichever way it swings) after I check it out.

Ninja edit: Here is a loooooong publication about vitamin d. Benefits, statistics, insufficient vs deficient, etc. I did not read it all yet but looks comprehensive.

Saw enough to convince me to continue to take it and that 1000IU is within safe levels. Everyone should make up their own mind. With the guidance of a GP of course.

Seems like a reasonable amount. My GP said 2000 IU would be fine as well but I am a cheap skate and didn't want to be buying pills that often.

Certainly. But peak absorption of vitamin D happens at the same time (sun height) as maximum radiation absorption. Sooooo... get your vitamin D AND your cancer.

All that was meant to say is that the sun is a natural source that prompts increase in vitamin D. Not that one should stand and look at the sun all day or that is better to be in the sun than take a supplement.
