I listen quite well thank you, but I have no interest in your blathering about Rolex, chevy, me selling my x and buying a tb, design versus funtionality, suggesting a brand of watch to buy, and your strange correlation that i should be concerned about my safety while wearing a gold watch (!) as they have absolultely NOTHING to do with my original simple question. You seem unable to grasp that.

You've made so much noise about everything but the question that I asked that it's difficult to ascertain wtf you're even talking about.

lol gresch. missed the beginning, but rad the initial question.

i am concerned that an 18k gold watch will wear (gold is very soft); gold plated will leave the underlying metal exposed; will 'ruin' th elook of the watch.

steel, titanium... i prefer stainless. or my g-shock (its undestructable, and i wound up destroying my rolex 3 times-- not worth the $$$$ imho).

so, my dressy watch is my omega...

Gresch- I'm a little late to the thread, but here's my .02. I have been down the same road you are going with the watch thing. About 10 years ago, I bought a Tag, stainless/gold combo. Like you I wear the same watch every day, and after about 4 years clothing friction wore the gold plate from all the high spots on the bezel. I went to stainless- bought a Rolex Explorer II. After 6 years it still looks great.

Re: status symbols: I bought the Rolex as a present for myself- I had a great business year. I chose the Explorer II because it doesn't look like a traditional Rolex watch- most people buy a Datejust or Submariner- easily identifiable as a Rolex with just a glance. I wear it every day, and have not had a problem with it. It is the only piece of jewelry I wear. Not everyone buys nice things as status symbols.

Another you might consider is a Tag Monaco- unique look you don't see every day.

Why buy gold the color of steel? You wouldn't buy a BMW and then put a Ford body on it, would you?

My girlfriend has worn an 18k Rolex every day for a number of years and it holds up just fine. Stainless steel will still scratch and dull over time. The upside to 18k is that it's a soft enough metal that a jeweler can buff it out and the lustre will return like new. Dents and dings come to it easily however, so don't wear it while you're installing mods in your X5.

As for the comment about Rolex being just about status and not quality, I beg to differ. Rolex, like BMW in its industry, pioneered much of the technology for the modern mechanical watch and raised it to almost an art form. A Rolex movement is a thing of beauty. I have a 40-year-old Rolex in my collection that keeps time just as well as the plastic Casio quartz I wear every day to work.

in answer to the question of why gold in the color of steel, it's because the face style that i like only comes with an 18k white gold case/etc....
Btw - I have no problem with Rolex, I just happen to like this certain breitling.

Since it's not an either or scenario, may I suggest a Ulysse Nardin Maxi Marine Chronometer. Stainless steel, you can wear it with anything, tough as nails, take it swimming in the surf, etc. Accurate to about 5 minutes per month after 6 years of constant wear...I have #2098...best part is I've never seen anyone else wearing one. Swiss made, by cat fanciers.
