My wife and I are on our 3rd rottweiler; we have several friends with rotts and know some great rott breeders. All we can say is that they are one of the nicest, warmest, safest, loveliest, faithful, most protective, best-charactered dogs around.

The stereotype of a dangerous breed is just that; a stereotype. Dangerous dogs are dangerous due to careless / stupid / irresposible / bad owners. Upbringing makes a dog. Period. Obviously a powerful dog like a rott will be much more dangerous if unbalanced (i.e. bad upgringing) than a less powerful dog.

Just like a reckless driver on a humvee is bound to pose a bigger threat to the environment around him than the same reckless driver on a mini !!!!

I don't know what the answer is or if there needs to be one but hate it when you hear stories of babies killed by dogs.

It is a worry in this day and age when in the park or whatever letting the dogs of the lead.

How annoying is it when your out walking the dog how some folks let their youngs one run up to your dogs their hands out screaching at the top of their voce how cute your dogs is or the owner who has no control of their dog who is of the lead running about like a nutter winding your dogs up.
So your concern is mainly the OWNER taking the dog off its lead, again, the OWNER is the problem...not the animal.

not really sure I mean if a owner has his westie off the lead and it's making a b line to me I would be less worried than if it was a rotty.

so swings and roudabouts wouldn't you say.

I mean if you have a 5 month old baby sitting in his push chair and a westie is running up to the push chair from 1 direction and a rotty is running up to the push chair from another direction which would you be most worried about.?????

guess that's my point

Wagner,

I understand your protective nature of these beautiful and mostly friendly animals.. But just google "Rottweiler" and "Kills" or "pit bull" and "Kills" and you will see the reality. There are many of these dogs that have been labeled "harmless as a fly" "a family pet" that have turned and either accidentally killed someone (usually a toddler) or have done so on purpose.

And the insuation that you can compare a racial sterotype to a dog behavior is a huge insult to anyone reading your post. Your comparing human characteristics vs. canine characteristics -- but that's off topic so I won't go there. I understand the arguement you were trying to make, it is logic 101. If A then B = C is a false arguement. I agree. It is a false arguement. But that does not mean that Rottweilers don't kill.

I could go on and on.. But at the end of the day, these pets can be lethal and have proven to be dangerous time and time again. They usually kill kids under the age of 4 for christ sake.

You can champion for the right of the breed all day long. But if you enter a dog run and I'm in it with my dog, I take the simple route. I pack my things and I leave. I don't start arguements with the owner. I don't insist to the owner that they should put there dog on a leash. I just leave.
-- But that doesn't change my opinion. If an ordinace came to my city about outlawing the dog, I'd sign it in a second.
I've seen way too many attacks on people and other dogs from animals that were labeled as "pets" or "part of the family" or "sweet as pie"...

So good luck with your dogs, just keep em away from me.

I agree 110% and I have done that before, I will not have my dog in the same pen or dog run as a Pit Bull or Rottie

Study: Rottweilers responsible for most fatal dog attacks on humans

Rottweilers have reportedly been involved in 33 fatal attacks on humans between 1991 and 1998

ATLANTA, Georgia (AP) -- Rottweilers have passed pit bulls as America's deadliest dog breed, according to a study released Friday.

The large dogs were involved in 33 fatal attacks on humans between 1991 and 1998, the American Veterinary Medical Association said.

The study's authors, using data from the Humane Society of the United States and media accounts of dog maulings, reported 27 people -- 19 of them children -- died from dog attacks in 1997 and 1998.

Now I don't blame the breed, I blame the owners... But when someone shoots someone in the head, i don't blame the gun, I blame the gun owner. But that doesn't mean putting a restriction on guns is not a good idea. Point is, the dogs should at least be regulated somehow. They are clearly dangerous in the wrong hands.. AS IS A GUN.. AND WE HAVE RESTRICTIONS ON THOSE ALSO...

You need training and a license to carry a concealed weapon, why not set a higher license fee (and manadatory training) for those of us that have pits, boxers, rotties, etc? That will fend off the folks that just want to keep a dog as an accessory and hopefully keep innocent dogs out of the wrong peoples' care?

If Rottweilers, Chows and Pit Bulls suddenly didn't exist, I would almost never again sew up a child's face from a dog bite.
