decipher your ol'Uncle's ramblings, .I'm just trying to be careful and not screw up, what is now, a fookin great pic and, to get some better sound, (espc. ctr channel), and drive some speakers on our FLA shack lanai porch thing. And, I didn't wanna pop big dough for a rec. that did differential equations when all I needed was arithmetic. My sys. back on the mtn, while "old", runs like a top, it's all connected and I do not screw with it. Thanks, K... And, thanks to Vig, too! I will check out the sites, though I'm Yama conditioned from what I have/know, back on the Mtn set-up. Cheers, all and Best Regards, OlUncMtr [email protected]

I can vouch for the Pioneer 1016TX as mentioned above and it is one sweet receiver. You would still need some speakers. HOw about the Onkyo speakers-in-a-box type setup?
Another option is to go via the 2.1 route (2 fronts and one sub) with virtual surround. Phillips has one that does Divx and DTS and DD on DVD(for all your porn moves OleUncle) and also does HDMI (not needed though). Will also act as a USB host. Total price is less than $350 including the speakers. It might not do video in though but worth a look.

mD: I'm no solderhead either...We have a flatscreen with an infra-red transmitter...I point the remote at it and the TV makes noises. All the gear is hidden somewhere.
I believe we are running a Yamaha RX-V657; we give it a thumbs-up. Can't say if it's the receiver or the speaker set up, but when I play the beach head insertion scene in Apocalypse Now, (Kilgore: If I say its safe to surf this beach Captain, then its safe to surf this beach.) our house sounds like the roof of the US Embassy in Saigon circa April '75.
