That depends on where in NY and how much you are looking to spend.

For 2500-3000 you can get a place in Manhattan. The upper east side is very nice -- perhaps somewhere in the 70s or 80s. If you wanted to save some money, you could get something nice in Queens (which is a half hour train ride away) for around 1500-2000. But if you can afford it, you'll probably prefer to live in Manhattan.

You do not want to park your car in Manhattan unless you want to spend $2000-2500 a month on rent and $500-600 on garages. The parking tax is annoying, but you can get an exemption from the 10% surcharge as a city resident.
Where to find a place in 3 weeks? Are you coming to the City to visit? Brooklyn is nice and is a simple subway ride to work. Upper east, upper west, the village, tribeca. You can't really go wrong anywhere. If you use a realtor, many of the fees are paid by the renter, and others are paid by the landlord. It depends on the realty company in most cases. Otherwise, get the NYTimes--you can probably check the sunday classifieds online. I'll ask around and see if I can find you a rental realtor--PM me your info if you are interested. I know your work area well. Welcome to THE city !

I manage a rental building in the city (www.thesolaire.com) if you go to hells kitchen you will probably find the best deals bang for your buck. go to www.thevictory.com and ask for Rudy he's the manager for that building and ask him what his price range is. If that does not work out pick up the NY Times and browse the real estate section, one thing I suggest, stay away from brokers as you will be doing yourself a disservice.
any questions PM me

You don't normally have a car in Manhattan.
If you live in Queens or NJ you could keep the car. |

I'd recommend Jersey City area. For $2500 to $3000 a month, you can buy a condo and get something for your money. That's ridiculous if you ask me.
That's more than the mortgage on my home. |

I don't think he's ready to buy now or he would have mentioned it, perhaps he wants to get to know the city narrow it down to one place where he wants to buy then pull the trigger. I do agree that rents in the city are extremely high but hey it's NY, bang for you buck as far as rentals everyone in real estate knows that you will get the best apartments in Inwood (uptown Manhattan) huge apartments for $1000 - $1500 and it's one of NYC's best kept secrets.
