anyone still own a turntable?

Thinking of getting one to complete my home theater system. Ebay has a lot of vinyls cheap.

Any good turntable that someone can recommend without the hefty price tag?

Even when I was a kid, I thought the vinyl sounded so cool and warm at the same time. There is something about that sound that wants me to get a turntable again.

I think most turntables sold today (the few that are!) are pretty quiet as far as rumble specs etc. The important piece is getting a quality cartridge setup.

I use an old Pioneer direct-drive turntable (I think it was the first direct drive Pioneer made and it is overdesigned ) with a modern cartridge to transcribe old records to digital. I do it mostly for some older songs for my show, but I also transcribe one-offs for paying customers too!

I'll have to look at it tonight and get the specs off it - I don't remember off the top of my head.

Mick, I purchased a turntable 2 years ago and love it! You'll have a lot of fun with it.

I reccomend the Music Hall MMF series of turntables. You can see the entire line up on the Spearit Sound website at http://www.spearitsound.com (these guys are awesome, I've known 'em for 10+ years and they terrific folks to deal with). I have the MMF-7 and like it a lot. I also purchased a Plinius pre-amp to go along with the MMF-7. These guys have some great deals on used pre-amps so ask them what they might have for left overs or demo equipment.

Rega also makes a great turntable but as far as I know Music Hall has really become the best 'bang for the buck' in the market right now.

I own a Rega (so people will think I am an audiophile) and a Technics (because I grew up in Brooklyn and Jersey during the Hip Hop era). Depending on your ear and need many will fit the bill. The Rega is the supposedly the king, Technic rules the club scene.

Still have my old albums, so definitely need a turn table. Here's one on ebay that I used to have and was great:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...sPageName=WDVW

(I know nothing about this seller or the quality of what he sells)

As previously pointed out, the catridge/stylus is where most of the quality issues come from. I'd check to make sure replacement ones are available for whatever you buy (maybe get an extra and put it on the shelf - so when your cat accidentally steps on the play button and repeat buttons and you don't find out it has been running for a month so you are not screwed. )

Mickey, Denon and Technics are the industry standard. If you want to go the audiophile way, try a pre-owned Marantz or Meadowlark. Occasionally difficult to find, but sometimes they show up on ebay. Thing is that if you get that Denon or a Technics and something goes wrong with it, I can fix it for you.

I think the Denon and Marantzs that are used in studios are probably a cut or two above the consumer stuff, wouldn't you agree? Check out http://store.acousticsounds.com for records and stuff!

Stop !!! Hammer time !!!!

- No really... I own turntables.. Two of them and a mixer. Although there are a number of good options out there, listen to what JV said..

In Particular, the turntable you need to get is the TECHNICS SL-1200
It is the industry standard. Almost every night club uses them. They are as solid and dependable as it gets !!! Of course there are some other "plastic" feeling turntables.. But I would NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, trade in my technics for ANYTHING else. If there were a nuclear war, the only thing that would survive is coakroaches and the SL-1200

In all seriousness though. They also retain their value better than any other deck. Have a great "feel" to them and look nice.. You can get it in silver (the american model) or black (the euro model) which comes with a u.s. currency adapter. I opted for the black. Have had them almost ten years and have never skipped a beat.

Good luck,
B
