It is the industry standard. Almost every night club uses them. They are as solid and dependable as it gets !!! Of course there are some other "plastic" feeling turntables.. But I would NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, trade in my technics for ANYTHING else. If there were a nuclear war, the only thing that would survive is coakroaches and the SL-1200

In all seriousness though. They also retain their value better than any other deck. Have a great "feel" to them and look nice.. You can get it in silver (the american model) or black (the euro model) which comes with a u.s. currency adapter. I opted for the black. Have had them almost ten years and have never skipped a beat.

And parts are easy to come by when/if you need them for that SL-1200. We don't spin vinyl anymore here at Z104, but they still spin a lot of it at our sister station, which is Classical music. They currently use the SL-1200 and the Denon that Mickey linked to above is in use in their production studio and as an emergency backup when one of the 4 Technics goes down or needs routine cleaning and maintenance.

You'll get more mileage out of a turntable which is direct drive as opposed to belt drive. And if you ever need to scratch and transform, direct drive is the only way to go.

So should i go for the denon? I already ordered a bunch of vinyls from ebay

Mick, sounds like a good deal, but this turntable is a belt drive set up, which is not as good as direct drive in my opinion. If you're going to simply play 33's or 45's this'll do nicely. I don't think it has pitch control or that it'll play 78's.

It should sound pretty good with a decent stylus and the ease of operation makes it very hard to scratch your new vinyl collection.

i also see that unless one is willing to plunk down a lot of cash, the direct drive turntable motors will transfer the vibrations through the drive shaft to the turntable to the stylus arm and will not sound so clean. A lot of damping is required and this translates to a lot of $$$$. I am this close to ordering the Denon unless someone stops me.

Belt drive is also more prome to microphoning (picking up sound from the speakers). I wonder why the industry standard turntables are direct drive? They are selected by broadcast engineers who know and care a lot about sound quality.

Mick, that Denon is great for the price, you should go for it if you haven't already. Never had a problem with vibration from a belt drive or direct drive turntable used in locations 5 feet away from people running down hallways on upper floors of any studio I've ever worked in.

Actually that is a very good point. I have had bar glasses hanging on a rack crash down on the floor because they shifted when I was playing the music two loud during a party at my place. Had 3 glasses broken and two cracked.

The Deftechs (with 1 each 18" subs) pump out a lot of bass and now I have the bass turned down but it is still enough to rattle windows and glass anywhere in the house. Wondering if this would be a problem with that turntable.

Any good turntable that someone can recommend without the hefty price tag?

Even when I was a kid, I thought the vinyl sounded so cool and warm at the same time. There is something about that sound that wants me to get a turntable again.
