The sound is coming from the PC itself.

Probably an overheated problem, but you said you turned it off yourself. So I doubt that.

Anyways on the back of the desktop there is a switch. Flip it then flip it back.
It was just one little beep and the sound of the fan. It's the same sound it makes when you first turn on your computer. However, it only lasts about one second before it shuts back off.

I already tried the switch flip thing. No success.

Had a recent bad experience with Dell and their support nightmare. Never buying a Dell again.
It won't power on at all.

Dell support is a nightmare. That's why I came here first.

Do you see aything on the monitor at all, or is the shutdown immediate? Possibly a registry issue- try to get to the bios via the appropriate function key during boot-up and start in safe mode.

Hi Michelle,

Sounds to me like the power supply went bad. They are not too expensive and pretty easy to replace...so if it's not the culprit you won't be out too much money or time.

I'm leaning towards hard drive failure as well. How old is your PC? What is a "noice"? I will assume that you have still not backed up your pictures. Since those are probably your biggest assets on that computer, you may want to consider removing your hard drive, and take it to a computer shop to diagnose the hard drive and retrieve/copy all of your pictures prior to a potential failure (I can walk you through how to remove it). If they determine that it is a hard drive issue, you can pick up a new hard drive, they are pretty inexpensive, and then have the same computer shop transfer over everything from the old drive if possible.

I think a drive failure will bring up a bios generated screen...?

It could be many things: Hard drive, mother board, CPU, failing video card, etc....
The first thing to do is to identify if it is the motherboard and or CPU. Try to access the BIOS. On a lot of desktop computers the BIOS can be accessed by pressing the delete button while powering on the computer. If you can get into the BIOS then your motherboard and CPU are ok.

Michelle, which model of Dell do you have?

Apparently, for the 8200 at least, there are four diagnostic lights on the back of the computer. Check out this LINK.

The computer won't turn on. I press the button and nothing happens. It's dead.

Whoops! noice = noise
You assume correctly! I still have not backed up a single thing.

I'm not sure of the model. I'll look when I go home for lunch.

Thanks.

Try this when you get home. When you received your new Dell, it came with a CD titled, "Drivers and Utilities". There is a "diagnostics" feature on this CD. As stated on the front of this CD, "You must boot your computer from this CD to run the diagnostics, which may require changing your computer's boot sequence". Maybe others here can chime in on how to "boot from this CD".
