It sounds like the City of Baltimore is trying something out to see if it produces results. Personally, I doubt it will work. But I do commend them on trying, since most city governments have done nothing to try to fix the failing education system. If you have better ideas on how they should go about addressing the problem, please do share. If you were in the city council, what kind of legislation would you propose to help fix this problem??

Ever play the old computer game "Sim City"? This is the real life version.
This coming from the Lord of Double-Talk, What, ya couldn't find a way to compare this to WWII?
Let me see if I can find a Wiki on it.

You asked me how to solve the school problem I told you the answer, the school isn't the problem. For some reason people insist on solving the easier issue. The problem is the society as a whole, that is not something I could type up in a post to the X5World board. If I could, I wouldn't be here right now

Eric5273 you have to realize what is going on. The gov't is paying kids to go to school. How crazy is that? The gov't is paying kids to do something that they should be doing in the first place. When you start paying people to do things that they should be doing where do you draw the line? Do you pay the homeless guy to work? Do you pay the drug addict for every clean drug test? Do you pay fat people to stop eating McDonalds? Do you pay parents to be good to their kids? These kids are going to be rewarded in the longrun for going to school and getting good grades why do tax payers have to pay them right now also?

In Atlanta they are paying kids to go to after hours tutoring. With no tests to show improvement many of these kids will simply show up and punch a clock without learning anything just to get paid. That is crazy.

I understand your frustration, but if you don't do something about these kids now, then you will end up instead paying even more taxes to support these kids when they end up in prison, when they have kids as teenagers (welfare), and to hire extra police because there is so much crime.

I'd rather pay some kids to go to school and have them end up being productive in their lives, than pay for them to be in prison as adults. Like I said above, I don't know if this will work, but something needs to be done beyond preaching "personal responsibility" -- politicians have been doing that for years, and it does not appear to be producing results.

To this extent. People should stop preaching "personal responsibility" and start taking it. For those who refuse (meaning irresponsible parents) then make them pay. I don't care how it's done but some parental financial arm twisting ought to take place against parents who don't do their job. And if they are not capable because of education or other issues then mandatory parental child training classes should be given to them which they can pay for over time, or they can work it off cleaning the Graffitti off of the personal property of their neighbors rather than sit at home watching Oprah.

Sounds harsh??? Maybe but I bet they'll get up off their lazy behinds and stop making excuses for teachers, school system, the government, tv, video games, then internet, and every other excuse they have for not getting the job done..

I go to a competitive school. Its not cash that gets us motivated, its purely wanting to be better than everyone else and getting into good schools that motivates us.

But... then again, I guess the whole worlds going down the toilet, we have to lock our doors now

And that is most likely because while you were growing up, someone (perhaps your parents?) told you many times that getting into a good school is important. And they probably told you this so many times over the years that today you believe them, even though you actually don't have any personal experience to tell you that it is true.

Unfortunately, these inner-city kids have parents that in most cases cannot even take care of themselves. In most cases they are single-parent families, and in many cases the "parent" is someone who really has no business being a parent. Very few of these kids grow up learning the same values as you did. Most of them don't even know anyone who went to college, and when they look around, the only people they see who are "successful" in their eyes are criminals -- everyone else they know is poor. So the criminals they see driving the fancy cars and wearing the expensive clothes are the people who become their roll models.

Not really. My parents are more the "do what makes you happy type," both who sent themselves to college from modest means, and from both sides of the tracks; and a portion of other parents are trust-funders and gold diggers. Under your logic, their children would all be learning how to "catch a good one," file nuisance lawsuits and working on their poker games all day...
What I was saying is that cash to pass your classes is stupid. One would think that one of these inner city children with unfit parents would realize the struggles their parents go through can be avoided by learning. But then again, what do I know? From what everyone here thats FROM Maryland seems to say, its a little off-balance.

I'm dead serious....
In this case I agree with Eric.
I took no prisoners when it
came to education with my kids,

My kids take no prisoners with their kids,
And my grand kids get the
sermon as well. Plus i don't
stop there if your a young person
within earshot of me and you are not
pulling your weight your gonna get a
kind ear full as well. And that's a fact.

Growing up in a Jewish family, I can tell you that not only did my parents preach about education, but there was enormous presure on me to perform well in school. Even a "B" was not considered an acceptable grade. I was expected to get straight A's, and when I did not there were consequences. I was expected to get into a good college, and it was made clear to me that my parents would pay for college if I got into a good school.

And then there was my best friend from high school... He was from a poor family, grew up in the bad part of town, and had parents who never said a word to him about education. He once told me that in his family, not only would his dad not even help to pay for college, but at age 18 he was expected to move out of the house and support himself. I doubt his parents even looked at his report cards. The only time his parents would get angry at him or his brothers was if they got in trouble with the law. Out of 5 kids in his family, only 3 graduated high school, 2 ended up in prison, and only one (not him) graduated from college.

Your parents have an enormous influence on you. Those who come from a good family may take that for granted. As they say, the apple does not fall far from the tree. Lousy parents usually means lousy kids. Not always, but usually.
