Was reading GQ on the plane yesterday and saw this article:

http://men.style.com/gq/features/full?id=content_6700

It basically says the easy days of going to Russia and finding a good woman are drying up. It used to be the women were trying to escape economic hardship but the economy has improved greatly and that's no longer the case. Now it comes down to demographics more than anything as there are millions more women of marriagable age than men now. The dream of the Russian woman is to have a family and that's not realistic for many women unless they look outside the Russia border.

Good luck Lam. My Bio teach in highschool had the opposite of your experience. He went through a company and six months later, he was married. Three years later she left him, won nearly everything in the divorce, and now he lives above the high school bookstore and doubles as a night watchman of the campus to make more money.

OUCH! 50%.. That's only for people with no Pre-nup..

And anyone with significant assets that gets married without a Prenup gets horn swaggled.

Let me just say this loud and clear as I came from a loving family, with divorced parents.

A PRE NUP, as un-sexy as it sounds, is meant to protect both the bride and the groom. It is a deal established between two parties, in the event of a divorce. Cause when divorces do happen, people get mean and vindictive. So the idea is, for people to negotiate the potential terms of a divorce when everything is good between the two people, vs. negotiating the terms under pain and potentially wanting revenge.

Marriage is not just an institution of family, it is also an institution of LAW. It is two parties entering into a financial business arrangement, (as viewed by the courts). Failing to negotiate the terms of the business arrangement before consummating it is just crazy and careless.

Matter of fact, the more I think of it, the more I think a pre-requisite of a marriage contract should be a PRE-NUP. Can you imagine how much less time the courts would have to spend on ludicrous divorces if the terms of the divorce were already laid out.

And in a society where 50% of marriages end in divorce, it's not such a silly argument.

Some people might say, PRE NUPS are expensive. That is a point I would greatly argue.

Some more info about Pre Nups,
1) They are not just for divorce
2) They outline what happens if a spouse dies (life insurance, etc)
3) They outline how the financial arrangements of the family are going to be handled: Who pays the mortgage, is there a joint checking account? Do you file joint or separate tax returns? What if any objects remain in possession of the marital party in the event of a divorce (a family heirloom). Is there life insurance? etc.

Most people think of Pre Nups as a divorce only tool which it is not. A prenup makes a couple examine their fiscal relationship before marriage to determine the best way to move forward from a tax planning and post death disbursements of assets as well.. The things that are covered in a Pre Nup are topics that all couples need to discuss before they are married anyway.

I would not enter a business relationship without a contract and like it or not, according to the law, a marriage is a business relationship.

It might not be sexy, but it does keep your ex-wife's new boyfriend from driving around in your shiny new Viper.
