Pssss...just to make Joe Blow even more upset over gas prices, the fuel you're putting in your ride...was purchased months ago at old oil prices.....you pay out the @ss for futures traders on Wallstreet and in other economies. The constant lowering of interest rates by the Fed, weakens the dollar, which encourages investors to 'energy commodities'. Look at it this way, those people from the 70's can stop bitching about how 'expensive' it was back then. And at some point, per basic Econ101, the cost will exceed the value and consumers will...good Lord...stop buying and look/demand alternatives. That should be a fun time.

Apparently Starbucks, and the like, are already starting to feel the penny pinch as consumers realize gas this week will cost them 34 lattes. Oh and on the Prez race tip, this royally plays into Republican hands as it is hard to encourage 'socialized' programs when your country is drowning. As well as making your consumer index look 'OK' since energy/food aren't factors...too volatile..oh how nice.

Now if we could only itemize that 12B spent monthly in Iraq. Oh, thanks Senators for just now asking (5 years in) shouldn't Iraqi oil money pay for the majority of this effort?

FB's Day Off?! Damn, I've seen that about a doz times and now I recognize the
car park jockey...he's gotta be that dude that does the crazy insurance calamity ad.
Ah, such trivial pursuits when you waddle past 60, lol!

Besides the "party affiliation", which in my opin is like saying one belongs
to the Moose vs the Elk, the next prez has got to put a few fingers in
the ol' dike: the monthly war bill, the dollar in the toilet; thus, oil prices
vis a vis, the greedy OPEC bums and the speculators...and, don't forget
the "price of living", via the oil cost pinchola.

I realize no prez can wave his non-royal hand and make all this stuff
happen by fiat...but, my kids, ~40, your kid(s), ~babes, are not gonna
like the flat azz broke country and economy they stumble into in the next decade.

JoeSixPack and the WalmartNation gang is not gonna have much fun in
the next couple/several years, imo...and, I include myself in that bunch,
living on a fixed income. Debt-free, I agree, but fixed and fookin eroding.

A little OT, but in one of the somewhat recent Fortune issues, there was an article on oil shale. Apparently, we have 3x more than the Saudi oil reserves, in Colorado, Wyoming and Utah. 30 years in the making, Shell's got over 200 patents submitted on new processes of bringing the stuff up (which is pretty cool in itself) and refining it. China and other parts of Asia have a crapload too. In the next 10 years we should start seeing some of it.

Oil shale may finally have it's moment

We were just talking about that 10 minutes ago. Gonna be interesting to see what the so called suits come up with to appease the natives regarding the Mtg crisis.

I'm not smart enough to know where it's headed but people who have made some serious bad decisions are all around us and who knows how this is going to play out. It's not going to be a pleasant trip that's for sure.

Diesel should cost more, as it contains more energy per gallon, up to 15% to be precise. So, at a premium of $0.20 per gallon diesel is artificially low. Refiners are going to charge for the value you are getting, modified by whatever tax structure local governments have in place. In some locations diesel fuel taxes are lower due to the trucking lobby, but in some locations taxes are higher due to the greater number of automobile drivers than truck drivers (counting votes).

It takes less effort to refine diesel, but the cost reflects the fact that there is limited refining capacity, many refineries are focused on gasoline, low sulphur diesel required plant investment over the past few years, and distribution costs vary due to volumes. Also, diesel prices are impacted by heating oil prices (same fuel) whereas gasoline prices aren't.

All those expecting a free ride with their new diesel vehicles are in for a shock. It will level out, sooner instead of later. The cost of driving a mile will be the same once it does, IMO.

Thanks for the explanation Jeff. It seemed odd that for as far back as I can remember, diesel was always the cheapest of the grades. Recently (last 8-10 years) it has turned around. I thought it was a conspiracy or something
