Computer Wonderment...
Since we have been down here in our FL house this season, this computer
will occasionally "pop up" a RealPlayer screen. I didn't click it on, and I'm not watching movies or vids when it happens, etc. My Task Mgr shows: realplay.exe and a search turns up pages of No Help and sites trying to sell me their version of "fixes". I just click off the box and/or click off the RealPlayer screen, but it's weird how it comes up all by itself every day or so. Any ideas for a low tech ol' idiot here? BR,mD Screen Shot below:

I hate RealPlayer. You should delete its directories, delete it from start-up, and delete all references from your registry.
If you ever want to play RealMedia files, install the Real Alternative program (which is free and does not bug you continuously). http://www.free-codecs.com/download/...lternative.htm Edit: To check your startup programs, you can use MSConfig which is already on your PC. There are many utilities that do this too. To fix your registry, you can Regedit (but do not make any errors). Last edited by brian5; 01-17-2009 at 02:54 PM. |

Agree, if you don't use it go to the bottom left on your screen, find the start button and click on control panel. Find add or remove programs, open it, find Realplayer and click remove. That kills it for sure.

You can run 'MSconfig' by typing msconfig in ->start ->Run and search for real. |

Thanks, Mates...I think I get it, but:
I occasionally do view stuff on Real Player. Does knocking it off preclude that forever? Does another "player" in my box step in, in its place? Or, do I download that link Brian suggested, in lieu of the real RP? Back at the low tech ranch, I have RP on my 'puter back on the Mtn, but it never "pops up"; did I do something wrong on this 'puter? Stuff like this drives me nuts...and when one digs on the net for help, there are pages of not very helpful sites, mostly pitching their version of spyware removal. (I use Ad Aware). NEway, appreciate the opins... I don't know how the "average" idiot can even keep his box & systems running. It seems it gets more complex by the day, and I really work at staying slightly savvy and running a clean machine. BR,mD |

With regard to the average idiot, get a MAC. |

That error message is saying that the player is having trouble upgrading itself. go to control panel and remove it. then reinstall and you should be fine.

Thanks, I think, for all the fine replies...
My intent was not to toss an aerosol can into our happy campfire here. I now understand what RealPlayer was trying to "do"; I have uninstalled it, and will watch an occasional vid on other methods for the time being. I am not a 'puter maven, but I am a good student of it and, esp. of my computer, as I spend so much time on it. One gets to know how their box runs, I feel. And, I do search hard for answers and info before I ask here. Macs are elegant, great for graphics/photos and all sorts of stuff. They are also pricey, imo, and I'm not looking for a new box or system at this time. I must say the "Get a Mac" tag line is wearing thin and I agree it would be like one of us telling most of the complaining posters here to sell the X and get a ________. NEway, no arm wrestle, and thank you for the tips and help. BR,mD
