That linked article says that this would be a good thing for consumers. That's wrong, it would be good for ONLY some of the consumers
 This would be really good for Apple. Doesn't help all the people currently locked into the AT&T contracts with the 2G, 3G or soon-to-be 3GS though. New phones will be needed for Verizon's CDMA and LTE networks. That might be costly development to support both in one phone -- I don't know. Maybe a Verizon deal will not be cut until Verizon has LTE network ready?

Would make sense, you can't rely on just AT&T. Talk about taking away market share
 (mini-rant: don't BBs work on all the networks along with many other smartphones? Seems like Apple is looking for a solution to a problem that doesn't exist for anyone else. All this just to have an iPhone? /mini-rant)

Friend of mine works for Verizon Wireless and won a trip with the President of Verizon Wireless.
The phone was made. Verizon decided against it. Verizon doesn't want an App Store or iTunes. They make tons of money off of their music store and other programs. Apple would come in and dominate it thus cutting back on their money.

Here's the problem. Currently, iPhones are GSM phones whether sold in U.S. via AT&T or rest of the world. However, Verizon is currently using CDMA which will be a defunct technology in the future. It seems both Verizon and AT&T is probably going to choose LTE as their 4G technology which is more related to GSM...Sprint has chose WiMAX for their 4G technology.
So probably Verizon and Apple will have to coordinate the release of a 4G LTE iPhone....unless Apple makes a special CDMA version. Anyhow, one thing is for sure, Palm Pre GSM version is coming out later this fall and Verizon will release Palm Pre by January 2010 (since Palm already has made a CDMA Pre which is on Sprint now). I believe AT&T will release the Palm Eos (candybar webOS phone) by this fall as well. I'm sure AT&T will release the Palm Pre by January 2010 as well. Looking at Palm's history, they have released their phones on multiple carriers in the U.S. My Centro has been available for Sprint, AT&T, and Verizon and also available as unlocked GSM phone.

Contract or not, if or when Verizon gets the Iphone, I will drop AT&T. I have the iphone and I am so sick of dropping calls. I was on a call today sitting in a parking lot and dropped the same call 5 times for a 15 minute conversation. Its just embarrassing.
