 . Although violence this strong is unusual for France, protesting against the govrnment is not. France has always had a "revolutionary spirit", and has always brought issues in the street. In 1968, students and workers joined forces protesting the government shutting down Paris and forcing the president(De Gaulle) to flee out of the country until things settled down.

The problem whith politicians in France is that they are all very old and very much out of touch with the real world. Chirac was already trying to get elected president when I was a kid.
I have been in the U.S for about 19 years. I came here after my BAC. on a vacation. I ended up going to college here (not planned)... met a girl...got my first job...broke up with the girl...met another one... etc... before I knew it I spent half my life here.

Read between the lines
You guys are missing this one BIG Time.
Much of the violence is occuring in the suburbs (which is where the "projects" are)... The violence is being perpetuated by young, muslim, immigrants. These are folks that are really not welcomed by the "French", but come because it's a helluva lot better than where they came.. and it is easy to get in. Unemployment runs close to 25% in the French workers paradise and hence the frustration with the whole system. I can't blame 'em This amounts to a second front on the war on terror.. I am glad it's the dam French that have to deal with it..

As a matter of fact, unemployment in France is 8.8% not 25% and the problem with the muslim population actually started after the first world war. The young muslim you are talking about are seldom new immigrant, but more often than not third or second generation of immigrants that have sometime difficulties blending into the french culture.

vive la france!
its that same spirit of revolution that inspired us some 230 years ago to revolt against the brits that is always running amock the french countryside. i hope there is an end to the violence so that innocent people don't get hurt. i hope its not muslim orchestrated either. and i am glad to see so many frenchmen on our site!
