Yeah, as Michelle knows, I have always been a Canon fan for their point and shoot cameras. My current model is an SD550. It's just too darn slow to capture those precious moments of the new puppies, and the video is poor. This camera is getting GREAT early reviews, and it also shoots in RAW, and shoots 720p hi-def video.
Panasonic Lumix LX5 Review | PhotoRadar I think it's the perfect camera if you don't want to step up to a DSLR, but you also want quick shutter speeds, manual controls (also in video), RAW capability, great low light shooting, and a pretty wide aperture to get descent depth of field for a point and shoot. Should be out in the next few weeks, and judging by the early reviews, will sell out early! |

+1 on the S90.
CEO has had one for the last 8 mths or so and is very happy with it. Great low light pics. Seems to be one of the best P&S out there. ...haven't taken any cow pics though

Some examples of the lighting issues I'm talking about...
In these pictures, there is PLENTY of lighting and the show ring/arena is VERY bright. (I guess because of my distance, I get very dark pictures. I've tried turning off the flash, which helps the darkness of the pictures, but they are very blurry since I'm shooting moving objects.) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() In these pictures, we're in a pavilion where there is a TON of light coming in from the sides of the building. ![]() ![]() ![]() This is my #1 priority when searching for a new camera. I'm sure there are some settings in my old camera that could've helped with this, but since it's lost, there no sense in trying to figure it out now. I really appreciate all of your help, guys.

Here is a sample image gallery from the Panasonic Lumix LX5 camera that I recommended. You know me Michelle, I have done all the research, and this is the best camera out there for the price. It will also give you the best low light shooting capability available to "point and shoot" cameras!
Just Posted: Panasonic DMC-LX5 sample gallery: Digital Photography Review It is available for pre-order right now through Amazon, as it doesn't come out till later this month. ***LINK*** |

I think you should try using the different metering modes on your camera.
In your case of having bright lights from the side or shooting into sunlight I would probably just use spot metering if you can. You may have to change your camera to P mode in order to do it, but thats ok since it is just another kind of fully automatic. Here is a video explaining how the different metering modes work and why your pictures end up dark. Even though its about the 40D SLR it works the same on all the canon point and shoots I have tried. YouTube - Canon 40D DVD | Metering Modes | Training Lessons | Another thing is to not use your flash since it probably does not have the range anyway. but the camera will think it does and make the picture darker to compensate. Hope this will help - if not you can call me a crazy rambler

SG - I really need to have the camera in my hands by next Friday, so the Panasonic is out. I'm really leaning toward the G11 at this point.
ravenheart - Everything you said makes perfect sense. If I had not lost my camera, I'd be posting the same pictures asking which settings I need to use on my camera to make them turn out better. (Yeah yeah yeah... ) The "no flash" option isn't possible unless I am able to balance the camera on the fence and if the animal and person showing the animal doesn't move - which is very rare. They just end up a blurry mess. I'm unable to watch the video at work, but will check it out when I get home. Thanks for rambling... I appreciate it!

Michelle , I think the best thing to do is study the manual for your purchase and then get info from xoutpost camera guru`s on the best setting for the shot conditions . once you know the adjustments required for manual settings you will get way better results than auto mode with practice . the conditions you are shooting would test the best photographers . good luck .
