I know of RUeben.

Im not saying your right or wrong Dan.

But my thoughts are, if it happens after 10, which is not a high number, why can i not find a single instance of it having happened ?

On an X5 that is, not saying it doesnt happen on other cars, in fact, im not saying it doesnt happen on x5's either, just saying I havent seen it mentioned anywhere, soooo ...

Also , just so you know my background, I have owned 8 BMW's and over 30 cars in the last decade, I modified alot of them, some very significantly.

The only issue I had with an ECU was an M3 which i supercharged and the idiot tuner bricked it. I then had it replaced, free of charge. This was a 96 car though and was done in 2003, so you can technology's on both fronts have changed considerably.

I agree that the best tuning need mor ethan a standard suit everyone reflash. I had an aftermarket piggy back computer added to my M3 becoz the reflash that was done by the idiots was no where near meeting the requirements. too many variables they had not taken into account.

Where I disagree, is that on a FIed diesel car that is well below its potential, the likelihood of major damage coming to the engine within its normal operating lifetime from a 20 - 30% increase is very low. Provided the tune has been tried an tested.

Which in the case of Jason and also the superchips, it has. And for the cost, its a no brainer.

Hardly , warning noted means I am now researching. If true the impact is sufficient to justify a little research.

Only if your chipping your car, in which case, irrelevent of his advice, you should have done significant research anyway.

Not sayign his advice is not welcomed, or should not be noted. Just saying I can find even the smallest bit of corroborative evidence to show it is advice worth heeding.

And from the tone of your previous post it seemed as though you where heeding his advice, where if you had of searched, I am sure you also would have found no corroborative evidence.

That is how misinformation is spread.

Has anyone had to replace an alternator recently on a 2006 X5 4.4? I have been quoted nearly $1600 by BMW fitted but I see them in euro & USA parts places for $400 - $600.
Im quite capable of fitting one myself so just wondering if there is a place is Aus to get a better price - BMW already charged me $200 just to tell me it needs one.

I replaced the voltage reg once , not alternator.

Its pretty straight forward job though. get a part no off real oem and buy the part.

Cheapest place locally will be imparts, but I cant see it coming anywhere near to the online price.

I wish I could be sure it is just the voltage regulator but so far no one can confirm this - have sourced one from the states at $100 delivered - have read all the woes on this site from people just changing the VR and then still having to change the alternator.
Have also sourced an Alternator in Aus for $900 but they are quoting it as 180 amps? I am waiting on a response from them re: brand, bosch or valeo - according to RealOEM mine is a Valeo 170 amp so not sure if the Bosch 180 amp is a compatible unit.
Did you remove the front fan etc to access yours or do it from underneath - there is a "how to" on here somewhere but its for the earlier watercooled unit.
cheers

Mine was on a 330ci so not relevant, but in that case i did it from above.

I dont think there is anyway to know if it is the VR or the whole unit unfortunately ...

Have decided to go with the voltage regulator for starters - the alternator charges as it should when it does charge so hopefully this will fix it, I think its worth the $100 to find out before I part with $1600. Will take a week to get it so will update on how it goes.
cheers.....
