Common failure yes.
Apparently from about 140k's these should be kept an eye on.
Mine failed last year at 210k.
Again Cliff at Parts Agent awesome to deal with.Bought all the gear from him, also did both rad hoses and water pump while there.
Cost approx $850 -$900 shipped to WA.
Better than the $1550 i got quoted oem for just the balancer.
My dad also has one 06 with 160k, did his at the same time, with was starting to perish.

I would advise (from a BMW enthusiasts point of view also as a mechanic myself) anyone with a diesel X to look at doing this as a preventative maintenance item.
