Drove my 2006 for well over a 100K miles, and traded in an F15 3.5i last year. Absolutely love it as much as the E53. Great car. Keeper for at least 200K.

Just a quick heads up - BMW engine oil is sold in 1 liter bottles (as compared to 1 U.S quart bottles sold in the US for the majority of engine oil). The N55 oil change requires ~ 6.5 liter bottles...

My bet would be it was a coolant system failure (exp tank or rad) followed by engine overheating resulted in cracked head - not uncommon in the M54 powerplant. (Ask me how I know having done it...

Check fuses #72 & #75 in the cargo compartment panel related to sound system. Check fuse #55 & #63 in panel under glove compartment related to DSC (if you have?).

Coolant expansion tank, without exception. Also, have them check the idler and belt tensioner pulleys while the belts are off - bearings start to wear after 100K.

My indie just did the water pump last week. 4 hours labor to drain coolant, remove drive belts, r/r water pump, check all pulleys. Add/bleed coolant. Part prices vary.
