What if you changed the wheel but used the original bag?
I have the e39 M5 wheel with my original bag, guess the simple solution is to put my wheel back if I get the recall. Also, mine is a sport too. |
You have a sport pkg E53 and will be on the recall list.
Good idea to swap the OE wheel back before you bring it in. Dealers might be instructed to "push back" with modified equipment vehicles, due to limited availability of replacement bags. |
Thanks!

Sooooo why is it 2003-2004 models with Sport wheels only?
2003 Sport Package has the round E46/E39 facelift airbag (which I have on mine) 2004 Sport Package has the oval shaped E53/E83 LCI M sport airbag, which would also be on 2005 and 2006 models. 2 different airbags, I'm confused. |
We'll have to wait and see how extensive the recall gets.
Takata made numerous airbag configurations. |
That's a good question and it doesn't make any sense. I was wrong when I guessed about which bag itv would be, but I'm going to guess that they will add more years.

As of right now my VIN has an open safety recall for the driver side airbag. 2003 3.0i with sport steering wheel, Feb 2003 build date.

FWIW - I got the recall for my wife's 04 325Ci vert. I took a ride over to Open Road BMW in Edison, NJ - didn't have an appointment, was done in about an hour. They had plenty of parts according to the service manager, but they are clearly staggering the dates...I think the next wave of notification will cover newer affected models.

That is some hopeful news. I am going to call the dealer tomorrow. Luckily we have 3 large ones near by. My cousin has been waiting since about September for her Toyota. As of today her dealer still doesn't know when they'll have the parts.
