DON'T mess with the autoupdate.
I think this was for any future firmware updates to the head. NOT for config settings.
When I first got the GT1, I mistakenly thought that to update the settings I had to do this.
I think that you may be having the same problem that I had with the config settings.
All your problems sound familiar to me. I will try and recap how I resolved when I have some time. Too much going on at the moment.

Fo DIS, go to Services at the top of the main screen. Select version and it will give you Admin version and DIS version.

Yes, DIS v43 will diagnose & program with the DK.

I have no experience with SSS yet so I have no idea how to check SSS version.

Twins! OH GT1 owner who knows anything and everything!

I am thinking about getting me a GT1, really all I want to do is the programming stuff, but I don't want to get a T30 laptop.

Think I could run the software on a Macbook running a Virtual Machine with XP on it or something along those lines?

I have no idea. There's always a possibility but why bother?

A T30 is only $200-$300 and you know for sure it'll work.

Not sure I'd recommend the laptop GT1 for you as don't ya have some custom work on your X (Dinan)? Not sure if that make s a big diff. but another thing to consider checking out is ... weasel mentioned something about once the dealer uses the new system to program your X it will be unregonizable by older systems. Not sure if this means GT1 too.

Hailing weasel! Can you clarify this point. Does this apply only to certain systems or certain modules that need programming? Hate to bring the X in for something then all of a sudden can't use the laptop GT1! :(

That is mainly for I-level cars like the E60, E65, E90, E70 etc. On the older platforms like the E39, E46, E53 etc. it will only apply to the individual module programmed because it's software level will be higher than the older stuff. But if you have Dinan software installed you wouldn't want to reprogram with OEM software anyways as it would remove the Dinan software. For most replacement modules on the E53 platform you are just encoding it in with the replacement measures anyways.

Hi all! What you guys are talking about is very interesting! I bought both GT1 head (the yellow one) and the OPS head (the orange one) from eBay. They are working very well with my DIS v55 amd SSS v33. But only one problem makes me feel very uncomfortable, that is the BMW officially approved battery charger, in the SSS, it clearly says connecting to a battery charger is a must before coding. In Realoem, I found a BMW battery charger with part number 61432154949, I wonder if this charger can be used for coding cars. Can anyone provide some help please?
By the way, GT1 head works very well on my 12/2000 made X5 4.4i, but does not work on my 04/2008 made e87 120i. When I connect the yellow head to my 120i, it promps up with message to ask you to use OPS head (the orange one). When I use OPS head to connect to my X5, it promps up with message to ask you to use GT1 head. Interesting.

I am using a regular battery charger with no problems so far.
