Need help on calibrating angle sensor

Hi all! I need you experts' help on calibrating my new installed steering column switch. Although this happens on my 08 made E87 LCI 120i, I think it maybe similar to X5 (maybe E70 X5). Sorry for off tracked but your help is really appriciated and needed!!

Recently I did a retrofit to add dynamic cruise control and multifunction steering wheel to my 120i by replacing a brand new steering column switch (follow the official retrofit instruction). Since the angle sensor is integrated in the steering column, so I have to code the angle sensor to make it work. I currently have SSS v32, which is the latest version, and all the tools for coding my car. However, the program work did not complete successfully. It just kept saying 'the coding could not complete successfully' and fault entries in DSC. During the coding work, SSS prompted me to ignition off the car, wait 10 seconds and iginition on the car and continue, I followed the instruction and then the coding failed. I did the coding by choosing 'LWS' in 'Service Function'.

Now my question is:
1. Do I need to do a complete code to code the entire vehicle before calibrate the angle sensor?
2. Do I need to choose 'yes' when SSS prompts to ask me if new module is installed and then continue? (I chose 'No', and then chose 'load software')
3. Is there anything I did wrong so that the coding was not successful?

I really need your expert to give me some advice on this! If anyone here has experience on the job, please give me an advice on the procedure of calibrating a new angle sensor. Thanks a lot!!!

When the column switch/steering angle sensor etc is coded it looses steering angle sensor calibration, which leaves a fault in the system. That causes it to say "measures carried out with faults" or whatever. You likely just need to go in the diagnosing end (GT1) and perform steering angle sensor calibration through the test plan that comes up. If it is anything other than that and is an actual coding fault, the test plan will give you something to go on.

And if there is a problem caused by changing to a different module than originally equipped (as the E87 is heavily integrated software wise) then maybe killcrap could make a custom vehicle order for you that you can program in to tell the car it is supposed to have that.

Hi Weasel, thanks a lot for your reply!

So that means I need to code the newly installed column switch first, then calibrate the angle sensor, right? I have already added cruise control (FGR) into the system, it was coded successfully, also I added multifunction steering wheel (MFL) into the system, it was also coded successfully. Now only the angle sensor. I guess maybe I did not code the column switch first. Ok I will try. Thanks again!

Finally I successfully completed the angle sensor coding job. Here is the procedure:

1. encode the DSC, so that make the vehicle recognizes the new steering column switch installed;
2. calibrate the angle sensor in 'service function'. during calibrating angle sensor, just follow the instruction SSS prompts you to do, then you are there.

I think this maybe useful for someone who wants to replace their steering column switch for adding cruise control function or replacement and wants to DIY.

I've got some prices on the DBL800 power supply. Here is Australia it is $1900.00 + Freight and GST ex Sydney. I also got a price from a good guy called Skip at Baum Tools | Audi , BMW, Porsche, Volkswagen, Mercedes, VW, Jaguar, Ferrari and he offered one to me for US$1500.00. This price is still too dear for me as it works out about the same landed as what I can buy one here for.

So I'm still looking. Rogerkiu, what battery charger/power supply are you using?

I suggest you consider Ctek XS25000, it only costs around US$400. I just tried Ctek XS7000 for coding my 120i and found that 7 amp max current was not enough for even such small car (maybe Japanese car is enough, I guess). It could only stably provide 12.1v to the car due to overload (it should had provided 13.6v in normal situation in supply mode, according to the user manual), and went to protection mode after about 10 minutes, which meant it stopped working. 12.1v was not enough to make SSS to run and code vehicle. I guess my 120i consumes around 10 amp to 15 amp in ignition-on mode, x5 may consume 15 amp to 20 amp, so I will turn to XS25000 model which can provides max 25 amp in supply mode at stable 13.6v.

One more thing, the whole procedure I mentioned above to finish coding my 120i's angle sensor (including encoding the DSC module) was done with running engine yesterday without any problem (because the Ctek XS7000 could not provide 13.6v power to the car). So I can say that all control modules, except DME/DDE, can be programmed/encoded with running engine. To connect the car to a power supply is just a safe way to do it. I did encoding my IHKA (climate control A/C module), CDC retrofitting, VM retrofitting by this way before. However, I will do it with power supply connected in the future anyway.

Now My 120i runs extremely well! What you guys say?

I am honestly surprised you were able to do the coding with the engine running... but wouldn't count on that working for all but the DME as other modules like the EGS would be directly affected by engine speed/hydrolic pressures etc.

Totally agree! I will do it only with power supply connected in the future.

Does anyone know anything about these power supplies? For GT1 and OPS 3S power supply Manufacturer exporting direct from Hong Kong

I believe it is made in China, not in Hong Kong. No guarantee on quality. If it is cheap, you may have a try. Besides, it does not provide any spec on this product.
