I have not found out yet what it was? But I think the rubber bump stop might be the fix as my cousin has it on his and I dont have it on mine. Now its not the rubber bump stops to the left and right of the deck lid, its the one right beside the latch. Here is a pic of the BMW diagram. If you study it there is a BUMP STOP listed the replaces one of the torex screws that holds the rear latch in place. Its number 38 on the diagram. I dont have it on mine but, when my cousin got his back from BMW, it had this item in place. I cant even find the part number on the BMW system so, I guess it was introduced as the "FIX" for the rattle, so ask you dealer about it. It should only cost a few pennies and you could install yourself

No problem! It may not be a total fix but could help with the worst of it. I myself have done the tape/felt around the latch and it has worked for me, but I'm also getting the bump stop too.

I've also had the rattle issue in my '06 X5 and have put the felt pads on the rubber stoppers on the hatch door. Rattle vastly improved but not resolved 100%. I've noticed though that when I have passengers in the back seat (2 or more), rattle seems to go away completely. I was very surprised as I always thought the rattle was coming from the cargo area only (hatch or tailgate). Will need to investigate further. Anyone else notice this?

How did you fix the rattle between the 2 back seats. Mine is also coming from the back seat. When I have passenger at the back no matter what kind of driving/road surface I drive...no rattle at all. But without passenger at the back slight bumps and uneven road surface produce the irritating rattling noise. Thanks in advance for your help.

Has anyone tried this? Take everything out of the storage area including the cover...wheel, tools etc.. Then take it for a ride and see if there's any rattles. I did this and added back items until I found the rattle. It was the storage area cover. There's a catch at the front but in the back there are just 3/4 hooks that fit into holes but there is a lot of play. I haven't fixed it yet but that's where my rattle is. Just an idea.

BTW....I noticed where the hatch locks into the tailgate there are two rubber bumpers on either side of the catch/lock. One of my is missing. I got the replacement but of course the dealer wanted $100 to install it. Is there a way to access the catch? I tried taking some parts off the tailgate...I guess what I need to know is how to remove the catch from the tailgate please.

As far as I am aware there is supposed to only be one bump stop beside the latch!

If you look at the diagram on post #51 you will see a plastic/rubber peice that is magnified just right of part 23/24. This peice fits tight against the body inside of the hatch jamb to help keep water and other contaminants out of the hatch seal. As with everything else on our X5's when this peice hardens over time it can make a horrible cracking sound when you lift the hatch. It will also cause a mysterious popping noise when you slightly turn left right or just hit ta light bump in the road, and is caused by the slight movement of the hatch, or the twisting of the frame (which is very little) while the vehicle is moving. Solution: remove it which will likely break the little ribs that hold it into place, or llube it yearly with vasoline or some other plastic/rubber preservative. hope this helps. P.S. buying a new peice is not necessary as you will develop the same problem unless you remove it or lube it.
