I have had problem with the noise from the back since I bought the car (2003 model). Last week I went the the BMW dealer and ordered the small rubber bump that has been described in the previuos post. BMW charged 5 sek for it (less than a dollar). It really helped! The noise is all gone now! Finally! You have to close the hatch a bit harder to make it close properly after I installed it, but it is worth it. My car did not have any rubber stops next to the hatch locking previously. Thanks all of you who posted this info, without that I would never been able to explain to the BMW dealer what the problem was (as they had no idea).

No more CLUNKS!!

** By the way, is there supposed to be a 2nd rubber stopper on the right side of the latch, or are we only supposed to have the one on the left? (see pic 3) **

Just wanted to bump this thread up. I searched for the rear window rattle and this came up. The padding over the latch works to silent the noise, and I just wanted everyone else to see this thread again. Thanks DinanX5.

Make sure that the plastic spacers that fit in the lock are both present and complete?

Glad to have been a help! It took me a while to nail down the few little rattles and clunks, but it was worth the effort...

AHHHH! The SAME thing happens to me over bumps. Maybe I'll try the same thing.

I found that I did not have one of the rubber stoppers next to my latch, and so I ordered one. I tried to get the srew to losen but it didnt, and I ended up stripping the bolt. I hate this stupid rattle.

Actually the rubber bumper can be fitted- on over the head of the torx bolt without unscrewing it, so don't worry about trying to remove it. Also, there's only supposed to be a rubber stopper on the left side, not on the right...

Thanks. I gave it a shot, the screw is in pretty good, but I will try again tomorrow morning.

I got the knob installed, however whenever I close it, the trunk sticks out and the trunklid open message shows up on the obd.

On another note I have noticed that there is a rubber BUMP STOP listed on the parts system, that fits beside the boot latch on the top half of the rear hatch. The part numbers 51240392520 and you only require one. My X5 does not have one there so I'm going to get one as its priced at 56cent only!!

Does any one know if this part can be purchased online? My X5 is also missing it, and would like to try it, only is a pain to go to all the way to the dealership... also I noticed the hex screw is REALLY tight, would I be messing if I try REAL hard to unscrew?
