I had tape on my windows at the family camping trip two years in a row. Then the third year I didn't tape it, it just stayed up on its own, and I let my father-in-law borrow the car for some reason and of course as soon as he left, he immediately rolled the windows down and got it stuck again for an hour-long drive. |

I stuck a wire bypass in and it did not go away. My theory now is that the front brakes have also simultaneously worn down. The last time I checked them was when the light came on about 6 months ago, and it looked like the rears were the culprit at the time. Now it looks like the fronts might be worn down enough to trip the sensor. Sure wish there was a way that the car would tell you which axle was to blame. |
Just take a wheel(s) off if you can't see the pads without doing so. Go old school, do a visual inspection.

I did that. The visual inspection tells me there is plenty of pad left when the sensor is touching the rotor. Six months ago when the light turned on, the fronts did not look low enough to trip the sensor, so I finally got around to changing the rears about a month ago and now my fronts appear to be tripping the sensor too.

The sensor is on the inner pad you can't see with the wheel on; they Make a very cool felt gauge though for checking and with open enough spokes you can get around the rotor for a measurement.
With a mirror and sometimes with a phone you can get a decent look at the inner pads. Front left right rear are the sensor positions |
haha, you guys are cracking me up! I guess window regulators are a weak spot? :D
anyway, the mechanic fixed it, charged me 2hours so i guess it's not that hard of a job? |
Detailed the car and took her out this am for a quick run down to Mount Vernon to say happy July fourth to Gerorge Washington' home. Back and ready for a light dusting and a car cover nap.

I went ahead and ordered pads. I checked runout on the caliper and it is right at 29 mm which is about 0.6mm more than the minimum. That is about the same as the rears were, and I did not replace those rotors. Also, FWIW, I replace pads without turning the rotors (since I would have had to replace the rotors if I turned them) and they do not squeak at all. It was a bit of a gamble but I was pretty excited about it. It made the rear brake job pretty easy. I'm gonna do the same on the fronts and if they squeak, just order some rotors and throw them on after the fact. Rotors are so expensive for this car that it's worth trying to get by without them. |
I don’t remember the rotors being very expensive when I replace mine. If the rotors aren’t terribly grooved I don’t see any reason you need to replace him the new pads will wear in to any minor grooves
