Drove my 2002 E53/X5 3.0L Manual today and had no problems with the HVAC system. Later that day there were no lights on the unit and the fan was running on high even with out the key in the ignition. I had to empty the entire trunk. take the spare out and disconnect the battery. I figured that I'd let the car re-boot itself. NOPE. same thing. I said AH HA! I have a spare from a donor car I just sold. Went to put that part in and one plug would not go in. That's right the one my daily driver has is a 12 pin. The donor car was an 18 pin. Onto Ebay and found a 12 pin for sale for the right price. Plugged it in and voila I have controls again. Now in am going to sell the 18 pin unit. P.S. I tried to put a for sale ad and I am a premiere member but it won't allow me because it's locked. anyone else having this problem?

How in the world are you supposed to check continuity on a brake pad sensor???


I put in a new one when my old one went off (replaced pads as well)... "BRAKE" light on the dash never went away. According to this forum there is no code you need to reset or anything. I pulled the pad sensor off, checked the pins, greased it with dielectric grease, reseated it really nice and tight, and still have the light in the dash.



Pulled it off again and tried getting a meter in there -- I have no idea how you could check it. The tube is way too long to get a lead in, and there is no way to insert a lead in through the water seal on the back. It just pushes the seal in because the wire is so tiny.

Do you know which sensor is getting a code? Sensors work on continuity. Stick a wire bypass into the car side. A bypass will tell you if the error is sensor or body side related. If the light goes out, it's a sensor problem. I'm not sure if sensors work on 5V or 12V. Someone here could probably tell us.

Is there any way to tell which sensor it is? I assumed it was the rear because those brakes were much thinner than the fronts. But I was told there is no way to check for sure. I suppose I can strip the ends of a wire and stick it in the body side connector, that's a good call.

I'd put the old ones back on and strip the wires and twist them together, one at a time. If the error still shows with the wire twisted together then it has to be some kind of short further in the system. (No clue where/what in the system it would be...)

yesterday the rear window fell down into the door, I guess the plastic tabs or the cable bracket snapped off. Of course I'm off for vacation today so perfect timing ha ha.

The problem is that they are short, tiny wires that I could never get reconnected. So I would be buying a new one at that point just to see if the old one was bad.




Didn't you know? Window regulators actually NEVER fail unless you are leaving on vacation. (Three summers in a row for me, as we left on the same camping trip, so it's a running joke in my family now)

Can confirm. Mine went out while on vacation for a tennis tournament... in the valet parking line. Had to dip back out to an Autozone to get tools to get the window back up and secured before heading back to the hotel. :D
