While waiting for a friend to drive across the county, I pulled out the X5 and hand washed it. It needs serious wheel cleaning this summer. I loaded up a few tools and drove down to Kyle. I was asked to look over a truck that two shops could not find a starting issue. Crank/no start and parked for 2 months. While waiting for a battery and key, I hook up my tools. A fuel pressure gauge and spark plug tester. One spark plug wire didn't have a tip to snap onto a plug! The wire was just inserted onto the plug. Two wires broke while take them off. The wires were pieced back together for testing. It cranked up! Supposedly the spark wires had been changed. I don't think so. Each wire had factory loom over it. Unless the looms were moved over, unlikely, the wires are OEM. The owner will replace the wires and fully charge the battery. If it does not start up, I'll go look it over.

In the middle of changing out my leaky oil pan gasket and failed engine mounts. Taking my time since at my age, I ache pretty badly after crawling around on the ground for awhile.

Wow. Glad mine was on a lift for an oil pan gasket fix. Are you changing the diff seals?
Find some grill ashes for oil stains. Ashes absorb oil nicely. |

I've never heard of grill ashes. I've always used cheap kitty litter. The trouble with it is you have to grind it into powder with the soles of your shoes which can be laborious for bigger spills. It would be nice to find powdered clay. I don't really have access to grill ashes, as I'm cooking with gas! AM. |
I switched to this:
Zep Instant Spill Absorber 3lb Bag ZUABS3 - Dust-Free Formula https://a.co/d/aWVpQN3 Don't be fooled by it's light weight and tiny size bag. It's 10x as absorbent as the old timer clay stuff. |
I'll give that Zep a try. I recently had a huge mess to clean up when a friend of my wife stopped by briefly to drop something off. Her son had failed to tighten the oil filter after an oil change and she left oil all over my driveway. I spent about an hour grinding kitty litter with my feet. You can still follow the oil trail all the way up our street and several blocks away to her friend's house. Luckily she drove straight home and I warned her something was wrong as soon as I saw my driveway. Her son found the loose oil filter and unbelievably she had not run out of oil before getting home!
