M54 drools oil sometimes
 

M54s drip oil like a drooling drunk sometimes. One needs to be liberal with the RTV, good gaskets, keep an eye on the mains. I've not seen issues before on the gasket where the oil assembly attaches to the block before though, but anything is possible--that one is just a pre-formed rubberish one.

I guess some things are genetic.

What's exasperating is that prior to this f'up on my part, the old bitch did not leak a drop. I figure enough puddled in the belly pan and it's just gonna have to work its way out.

N54/55 are notorious for oil filter housing gasket failures. My F30 is still dry, but it's a garage queen so doesn't get out much.

I leased an X5 with a N55 for 3 years and it was clean the whole time, either that or BMW maintenance people cleaned it up very well.

I received and installed the new idle control valve, mass air flow meter, and intake boot as well as a new DISA valve. Sadly as I put it all together I discovered that I must have thrown away the little rubber coupling that goes between the boot on the throttle body and the tube that goes to the air filter. I just bought that damn thing a couple of months ago and then I go and throw it away with the torn boot without thinking. So another week in the garage it is. Nobody local has that kind of stuff.

I know what you mean, nobody here does either. I’m fortunate that Bimmerworld is in the same state, only a 4-5 hour drive, so ground shipping always means next day delivery. They’re good guys too, really good guys.

Make sure that gasket didn't end up in the throttle body vs. the trash. Happened to me.

I'm talking about the big coupler that connects the two pipes -- it couldn't fit in the throttle body.



It's the piece that you think "Why are there extra parts here" when you take it apart. They could have just connected the two pipes with one big hose clamp. But instead they have two pipes, a coupler, AND a gasket, with two hose clamps. German engineering at its finest.
