Not reassuring at all that the new one won't help much more than a regular one. I'm sure it's my daily commute that's the problem, I live about 10-15 mins. away from work. Even though the gauge does get up to temperature it's not getting hot enough to burn out the condensation. The CCV failed when we were down in the low teens for a couple of days last week. As for the DISA, he said I was driving on borrowed time... this pin was hanging out of it (the pin that drops and bends valves) and the flapper didn't move at all.

I also threw the 12mm spacers on the rears today, but I'm gonna take em off because I was getting vibrations :-/ It's just the failing rear suspension pieces being felt more. Blah.

This picture serves as proof that the updated insulated one they are selling is not the solution to the "MAYO". Short trips is the culprit of this. Glad you're back up and running on both X's sir.

Yup. Definitely the problem in my case. Thanks, feels good to be driving her again.

So in attempts to make my short trips longer I've been shooting down the highway to just turn around and head back towards the house on my way home from work. I also make sure to get on it pretty good. Today I took it up to about 110 and then slowed down, took my exit, as soon as you get off there's an intersection (red light), when I came to a stop the car shut off. Any ideas? I put it in park, turned it back on and it drove fine (no SES light).

*** Edit: Figured it out. The mechanic forgot to tighten the clamp on the intake elbow that's behind the MAF and it came disconnected. She's running excellent now.

does this short trip syndrom happen when the weather is above freezing?

My commute is about 10 minutes and the truck barley gets warm... but its never below 32. most mornings around 50....

I don't think that it does. I've only ever noticed the yellow gunk appearing when it was really cold out (in my E46 & E53). If it's not warming up quickly, you may want to look into replacing your thermostat.

Man, the CCV problem is so common, I'm amazed there hasn't been a true "fix" to the problem. There have been many cases of multiple CCV failures within a vehicles lifetime. Never mind the fact that BMW looks the other way, the aftermarket should have a reasonable solution.

Something with the design needs to change. I've decided to tackle this project with my mechanic, he claims to have a couple of home-brew fixes for the CCV. Expanding the hoses to larger diameter was one idea, as well as wiring up a heating element that would turn on when you move the key to the "on" position.

I was driving on the highway the other day and some old lady was driving on the wrong side of the highway. I immediately pressed my horn to let her know that she was on the wrong side of the. My horn sounded once and died out. Soon, after some azzwhole cut me off. Off course, my horn was inoperative. Thanx to this board I was able to fix the horn situation. I was praying that the spring clock or the horns itself was not defective. Opened the fuse box and sure enough the fuse was blown. Easy fix..... Yah.

There is a thread on the forum with a lawyer that is willing to do a class action lawsuit on this issue. Unfortunately no one was interested in joining...at least so far that is

It is definitely a problem and an expensive one too if it goes to the worst case (lockup). I personally have had it happen once and thank goodness it blew out through the oil cap. This is a big concern for me as I live in the north where cold temps happen quite frequently. I originally bought the vehicle for my wife to ride but because she only commutes less then 15 mins to work I have taken over driving it (my commute is just over an hour) to prevent her from experiencing this.

I will likely sell the X5 this year at some point because of this issue with it. Unfortunate because it is a nice vehicle other than this main concern for me.

I was afraid that I had broke the spring clock when I removed the steering wheel trim to paint that horrible peeling steering when. Plus, I did not feel like going thru the whole process of removing the air bag etc... To check the spring clock.
